I love what I do. Every once in a while I while I am tuning a piano at someones house it hits me - I am making a living tuning pianos. I am doing the same work that some one has been doing for over 250 years. In many cases tuners have written (on the inside of the piano) when it was tuned and I have seen dates from 1900 on. I love that I am caring on a tradition and there is still a demand for craftsmanship.
We live in such a digital world now a days. It is nice to have an acoustic instrument to play. I really like getting a piano that hasn't been tuned in years back in shape - breathing new life into the "ol'girl" especially when a parent tells me that their child is going to learn on it. The passing of tradition.

Wow! Jay is the most knowledgeable, efficient, and competent piano tuner (technician) I have encountered. After he worked on it, my piano has sounded better than ever since I bought it used eight years ago (including after previous tunings).
This time, it was badly out of tune after a move. He completed the basic tuning in just over an hour and asked me if I would like some additional work done to take care of some other minor issues, which he accomplished expertly. After he left and I was practicing, another rattling issue arose that was not apparent at the time he was here. He returned later the same day and took care of it at no cost, including significant disassembly; it was quite an unusual problem involving loose jacks, I believe, that required problem solving on his part, and he did more than he was asked to ensure the problem would not arise again. I would give Jay ten stars if possible!

Jay responded to all my emails/questions promptly. He was on time, very professional, did a great job tuning the piano (which has not been tuned in a long time), pointed out something on the piano that was broken, and fixed it. The whole experience was excellent and I would not hesitate to hire him again.

Jay was wonderful: responsive, professional, on time, and did an excellent job with the piano. My piano is very old and has some interior deterioration. Jay was very knowledgeable about the causes and even gave me two options for resolving the issue without pushing me to do it too soon. I really appreciated his depth of knowledge, efficient work, and help! My piano is happy and I feel confident he can help as it ages too. I highly recommend working with Jay!

FAQs
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I ask them to tell me about the piano - last time it was tuned, do all the notes work, are they happy with the way it is currently play, etc? When I am there I let them know all of their options.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a musician most of my life. I graduated from Berklee College of Music as a drummer. I then graduated from the North Bennett Street School and became a certified piano technician. I also apprenticed at a piano shop.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Career change. I was an audio engineer and I have always been intrigued by the mechanics of pianos. I decided to take the leap. All these years later I am very glad I did.
