I hired a group of contractors through the Thrumtrack app to rewire my entire house for an agreed price of $17,000. They obtained the permit and began the work. However, during the process, they caused significant damage to my property — including creating numerous unnecessary holes in the walls and damaging the flooring. Additionally, one of the workers was observed smoking what appeared to be marijuana (via an inhaler) on the job. I also discovered that they took electrical wiring that I already had stored in the basement without my permission. They cut an expensive, unused oven wire and used only a small portion of it, effectively stealing the remainder. Our agreement included rewiring the entire house, garage, and exterior posts. However, I later found out that they failed to include the garage and posts in the permit. Prior to the scheduled inspection, they demanded an additional $2,700, which was not part of our original agreement. When I refused, one of the workers — who appeared to be under the influence — began yelling inside my home, in front of my baby. The project subsequently failed the city inspection, and the contractors did not return to correct the issues or complete the job. They have ignored my calls and messages for more than ten days, only responding later to demand more money before finishing the work. I have since contacted the City Hall Inspection Services to file a complaint. I am also submitting formal complaints to the Department of Labor (DOL), the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office. This situation has caused significant financial loss and distress after paying $17,000 for incomplete and substandard work. I am seeking investigation, accountability, and any available remedies under consumer protection laws.

Rincon Electric's reply
Writing this response because this man is putting lies on my name and just want to set the record straight. Original price of job was $17,925, he asked for it to be $1700 flat and I agreed because he kept making comments about how he flips houses and if this job goes good, there could be future business so I tried building a good relationship by giving him the discount he wanted. From the initial walkthrough I asked him what he was changing/adding in his house since he wanted to rewire it, he didn’t want to add anything new (new lights, switches or outlets) and he just asked for new wiring because the house was wired in BX cable and wanted new romex. Also from the initial estimate that I sent out, it states that I was rewiring and replacing all existing wiring “IN” the home and any additional changes to the scope of work can result in additional charges subject to client approval. No where on the contract was the outdoor garage and his exterior post lights talked about. He only brought this up at the end of the job when I tell him that the existing wiring going out to his post lights are not the correct wiring and the wire is starting to deteriorate. I told him I can replace the wiring after the final inspection but obviously for an additional charge because was not part of original scope of work. Also said to him there’s no point in touching the garage because it was already rewired in Romex. This is where he believes and assumes that the garage and post lights should’ve been part of the contract which was never talked about in our previous texts, emails, estimates or contract and he’s claiming I failed to put it in the permit. Now if he can prove me wrong with digital receipts showing the garage and post lights were ever mentioned or talked about, I’ll wait, but the truth is there was never any talk about the post lights or garage. Secondly, he’s claiming I damaged his property by “making unnecessary holes in his walls” and damaging his floor. I spent time snaking wires in the house that had double ceiling and was a horse hair and plaster ceiling so definitely not the easiest to snake. I only made holes necessary to drill through headers and cross beams in the wall because we’re electricians not magicians, can’t magically put new wires in the walls without making holes. Also bought the heavy duty ram board which I laid and covered 90% of his floors, on top of that was using drop cloths and moving them to each area that we were working in. Not once during the entire week I worked there did he make a comment saying hey buddy you kinda scratched/damaged my floor or told me work more carefully, quite the opposite and would offer to help clean up and would comment saying you guys do a really good job. Another lie he is claiming is that I was “smoking weed” on the job in his house and I will admit to vaping my e cig but that’s not marijuana, that’s nicotine. Once again, not once during the week I worked there did he make a comment saying, hey do you mind not vaping/smoking in my house, he seen me plenty of times vaping and never said anything but now wants to lie and say I was smoking weed and “under the influence”. Another lie he’s claiming is that I’m a theif, stealing his wire he had in the basement. He had half a roll of 12/2 Romex which he had told me I could use, so that’s what I did, I used his half roll of 12/2 to wire his kitchen so the wire is still in the house just in his walls, never stolen. Same thing goes for the 20’ of 6/3 wire he had in his basement, used up all the wire to run to his new wall oven so really don’t understand why he is claiming I stole the “remainder” of the wire. This is why I want to set the record straight because he is just creating lies and wants to create an image of me which is 100% not true. On to the next lie which was asking for an additional $2700 before the inspection that “wasn’t part of the agreement”. As I stated previously when I did our walkthrough of the house, he didn’t want any changes in his house. It wasn’t until I was wiring the first floor that he asked for additional changes such as adding a 3way switch to control his stair light from 1st to 2nd floor, adding 2 outdoor sconces to his side entrance and adding 4 recessed lights and sink light in his kitchen. All of this work was never talked about or mentioned during walkthrough or was part of original scope, he asked for these changes 3 days into the project so just as any contractor would do, I added that to the invoice and labeled them as “extras”. I added an additional $700 as all those extras took about 6 hours to do and is another day of labor. I don’t know where he got the $2700 but when I did show him the extras he refused to pay as he said no all that work should’ve been part of the agreed “$17000”. Again lying saying I began yelling about that when we were having a normal conversation about it where he said “let me talk to my wife and see if it’s right that I pay those extras”. I went home that night and let him think about it and the next morning he was firm on not paying me and I calmly asked him how are you going to do this that’s not right but he somehow thought he’s in the right and that work should’ve been part of the project. No yelling was involved at all. Another lie he’s claiming is I failed my inspection. I passed my service inspection, rough inspection and still needed a final inspection. He believes because I hadn’t gotten a final inspection I failed the inspection but no where on the inspection status did it say fail, it said service and rough inspection passed, final not requested. He thinks because I haven’t gotten the final that means failed inspection. I told him I was going on vacation to Italy for 2 1/2 weeks and won’t be back until Nov 1st which when I returned I would’ve have called for final inspection. He’s also lying saying he’s been trying to contact me for the past 10 days, I have no missed calls, texts, emails or missed chats in thumbtack from this guy. He called me TODAY and I replied shortly after so again lying on my name. When he did talk to me said it looks like I’m not going back there to finish so he’s just going to hire another electrician. I told him I’m not going back until he pays me the money he owes me because not only did he not want to pay for the extras, he didn’t even pay the full agreed amount!! So far to date he has paid me $16,300 and didn’t want to pay me the remaining $700 of agreed price before extras!! So again another lie claiming this has been a significant financial loss and distress when he never even paid me the full amount !! Since replying to him and letting him know I won’t go back to finish until he pays me the money he owes me, that’s when he decides to threaten me by saying he’s going to file all those complaints and now adding lies and trying to ruin my reputation. That is why I had to say my piece to set the record straight because this man clearly lying on my name and I won’t stand for that. I would advise to avoid doing work for this man at all cost!!
