FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am always doing something to learn what's going on in the field. I just finished taking an E-Ventures course, which was dedicated to on-line businesses. With the internet changing as quickly as it does, on-line businesses need to try and keep up to what's happening otherwise all of their hard work may be for nothing. I also participate in a lot of on-line forums that are design based to keep up with trends and new styles. I attend tradeshows in my industry to see what's new, who's new, and all of that really fun stuff. You learn so much just by talking to your suppliers and manufacturers. I learn a lot from my clients. No two clients are alike and there's always a new challenge that gets presented, so it's really important to listen to my clients so that they walk away getting what they want/need.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I sort of fell into it about 10 years ago. I was doing a lot of sewing at home, clothing for myself, my husband and alterations from word of mouth. I was asked one day if I could sew some window treatments. I thought why not, I love home design and a challenge. And that was it. I fell in love with the idea of transforming a room and a piece of fabric. I could be creative and solve peoples window problems all at the same time. So wherever I moved, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Boston, I would do custom window treatments for a few select clients. I then got into retail and selling custom blinds and shades from companies like Hunter Douglas and Comfortex. So when I moved back to Calgary, Alberta, it was only natural for me to start up my own business doing what I absolutely love. I have an e-commerce site that offers the ready made and semi custom products, and I also have an in-home service here in Calgary where I can help to design and transform those homes that I so enjoy. I am always looking for what's new out there and where the industry is going to always be able to provide the client with all of the possibilities without feeling overwhelmed.
