About
My love for music is contagious. Also, I have a great deal of musical experience in addition to having been a counselor at a high school for over a decade. I love seeing my students fall in love with musical ideas, and I love seeing them progress. I truly believe that anyone can play music, and play it well, as long as they are determined and willing to put the work in. I usually teach beginning students how to understand melody and rhythm and how to best develop a technique that works best for them. With students who have played before, or are past the beginner stage, the emphasis is more on developing a firm musical repertoire. After that, the emphasis is on creating a musical identity of one's own. In this stage, improvisation is studied, as is music theory and composition. I have recorded and toured the world playing guitar for a number of internationally acclaimed artists including Grammy Award winning songwriter Lori McKenna, Grammy nominated singer Tanya Donelly, Sarah Borges, Amelia White, Eileen Rose, Scott Janovitz, Kris Delmhorst, Todd Thibaud, and Catie Curtis. I have toured as an opening act for Frank Black of the Pixies, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood, Throwing Muses, Laura Veirs, and I have opened for Gillian Welch, Hot Tuna, Steve Earle, Gary Clark Jr. and John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revivial.

I have been away from guitar for many years, so I am basically starting over. Russell has made the lessons easy to follow. He has also been very flexible with his schedule for me.

Russell not only has great technical skills and teaching methods, but he also makes you excited about learning the guitar. In my opinion, this is really important, because being excited is what motivates you to practice.

Intermediate electric guitar player looking to get better. Russell is doing exactly what I want -- which is to show how songs/fills/solos are constructed. A+
