Freedom of Speech Coaching

I have had two lessons with Jennie via Skype. Both were excellent. I have participated in many public speaking classes and coaching sessions. What makes Jennie's approach unique is that she shares the techniques she has learned as an actor - to help you be more relaxed and natural in your delivery, to improve the quality and resonance of your voice, and to make the way you deliver your lines more interesting and effective.Jan 24, 2020
I have had several lessons with Jennie Bissell in my home. I often give lectures in academic settings, and I was hoping to improve the quality and fluency of my speech to a level equivalent to top public speakers. Working with Jennie, I made improvements beyond what I could have expected. We worked on a variety of breathing and relaxation techniques used by professional actors. By focusing on producing speech "on voice" the quality and ease of understanding of my speaking increased substantially with immediate benefits. I highly, highly recommend her services for anyone interested in improving their public speaking skills. -EthanJan 23, 2020
Jennie is a wonderful speaking coach! She is incredibly kind, patient, and encouraging. I feel much more confident in how I present myself to others, especially those I've just met in the formal setting of an interview. Jennie has prepared me with warmup exercises to suit any type of mood, whether it be calming down or harnessing nervous energy in a positive way. Additionally, I learned effective ways to be more present and truly connect with people in interviews. I recommend working with Jennie- she is very genuine and truly cares about her students. I look forward to the chance to work with her in the future!Feb 1, 2020
Giving talks is an important part of my academic job, but I’ve been nervous about public speaking my whole life. At our coaching sessions, Jennie was very welcoming and empathetic, and made me feel comfortable right away. After a warm-up based on yoga and breath control, we practiced acting techniques for projecting my voice, keeping an audience engaged, and fighting nervousness. I was able to notice a real difference even after a single session. Jennie was a fantastic coach, and I’d highly recommend her to anyone looking to work on their public speaking.Feb 16, 2020
Over the course of 8 weeks I worked with Jennie, she was able to help identify areas in my communication style which could be further improved, and provide specific techniques in how to improve. Reflecting on how I now communicate both in my work and personal life, I believe the coaching has assisted in developing my ability to focus my active listening, speak with clarity and explain technical details in a manner which is both interesting and relatable to the audience. Best of all, the lessons are a lot of fun!Jan 29, 2020
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? We will start with a free, 20 minute phone consultation. After that time, I am happy to offer income-based pricing discounts.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? We begin by outlining what you like and dislike about public speaking, your wildest aspirations as a communicator, and relatively how long you'd like to work together. Each session begins with a brief vocal/ physical warm up that's tailored to your needs. We will work together to develop a warm up you can do independently before a talk or meeting (or daily) to help you feel grounded and confident, and communicate with ease. We then might move into exercises designed around building a particular skill (such as storytelling, improved diction, etc), or begin to work on a particular speech. We'll work on speeches (or interview questions, stories, etc) formally, but also creatively-- we might play games, work with your imagination, or explore new styles of delivery-- whatever is necessary to help you communicate with impact. A major focus of our work will be on developing awareness of your body, voice, and connection with others. There's a reason they call it stage "presence!" Clients typically schedule session 1-2 weeks apart, and some homework will be given between each meeting.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I received my MFA in Classical Acting from George Washington University/ the Shakespeare Theatre and my BFA in Acting from NYU-Tisch. I've trained in the UK with the British American Drama Academy, and with US Master Teachers such as Matthew Corozine and Tessa Lang. I am currently training in Accent Modification with Compton PESL. I am also certified as a Vinyasa Yoga Teacher, and am currently completing my 300 hour Mindfulness Teacher Certification with the Engaged Mindfulness Institute.
