Hired on Thumbtack

I hired a deck contractor to rebuild my wooden deck and to assemble a 900 lb. aluminum pergola on the deck. After the deck was built and the pergola assembled, I found out the contractor had not followed the manufacturer's guidelines for reinforcing the deck substructure to support the weight of the pergola. Other than that, the contractor did an excellent job of building the deck, and the deck passed the county's building inspections. I have a 544 sq. ft. deck with maximum seating for around 20 people. I needed better assurance the deck could support more than just me, my wife, and a couple of friends. To make a very long story short, I decided to have better support added to the pergola. But first I had to find a contractor to move the pergola out of the way. Six companies responded to my inquiries; five made site visits. I explained the situation and showed the manufacturer's recommendations to each. Some said the horizontal supports might work, others said they could very likely sag at some future point (sag in my mind meant it could lead to a structural failure). I hired J&J Masonry, Construction, & Home Repair because Jairo's recommendations provided the most support, and his price was the most reasonable. Two days after the pergola was moved, Jairo and his team (5 total men) arrived on time. It was very clear they had worked together before, knew what needed to be done, and how to do it. They removed almost all of the deck boards. They ran vertical 2x6 support beams across the width of the deck, and double 2x6 vertical support beams beneath those beams across the width of the deck. At the intersection of the upper and lower beams is where the pergola legs will sit (once they were moved back). Beneath each of those intersections, they installed frost footings with a 6x6 post to support a pergola leg. (Note: The upper 2x6 vertical supports combined span 12.5 inches wide and the full width (16 feet) of the deck floor. This is significant, because it gives the pergola contractor a lot more latitude when reinstalling the pergola.) I now have full confidence that the deck can and will support the pergola in extreme weather, up to and including, the manufacturer's highest rating of Category 2 hurricane winds (96-110 miles per hour). I was very impressed with their attention to detail, professionalism, and ultimately the end result. I highly recommend J&J Masonry, Construction, & Home Repair for your deck needs.

J&J did a fine job replacing the facia / soffit on my two car garage. They also replaced a door and replaced the rotted wood around the doors and windows. They completed the work in one day. I would recommend them for similar projects for anyone who needs this kind of work done. Mike P.
