Introduction: If a tree could speak, what would it say? Robert Stanley, Consulting Master Arborist, International Association of Arborculture and Maryland Licensed Tree Expert, might know. Coined the “Tree Whisperer” by his clients, Mr. Stanley gets up close and personal with his leafy subjects to determine what might be afflicting them and find ways to preserve them. He has been working with trees for more than 40 years. A member of the Maryland Arborist Association, an organization dedicated to promoting education and support for arboriculture, and the International Society of Arboriculture, Mr. Stanley’s arborist education extends beyond Maryland’s required level of experience. Mr. Stanley’s spectrum of arborcare services includes diagnosing injured or diseased plants, selective pruning to enhance natural vistas, structural tree supporting, transplanting trees of all sizes and integrated pest management. “My practice focuses on preserving and restoring trees by using the best methods of integrated plant management,” he says. Because he is against destroying any tree, Mr. Stanley often chooses to relocate trees in circumstances where others might cut them down. Recently, Mr. Stanley’s practice expanded to include the use of Arborjet microinjection technology, which places nutrients directly into the vascular system of the tree, providing nourishment with zero discharges to the environment. That is particularly important in critical areas around the Chesapeake Bay. The Tree Keepers website provides a link to a calculator that helps homeowners estimate their property value increase from any given tree. A tree’s environmental impact to absorb storm water runoff, cast energy-saving shade on the home and even cleaning the air, is also valuable. Mr. Stanley says even very large trees that have fallen in a storm can be rescued, such as when heavy snows in 2010 uprooted many trees. Mr. Stanley’s approach of repositioning and guying proved more cost-effective than removal or replacement. “When comparing the cost of removing and replacing a tree, it is more economical and easier to put it back up,” he says. Perhaps if a tree could speak, it might ask for Mr. Stanley.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

The types of work I preform for my clients, as a Consulting Arborist are: to listen to their concerns; assess by observation, and testing the condition of their trees; make an appraisal / recommendation ; create a plan of action; and implement that plan to care for their trees.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Why Hire an Arborist? An arborist, by definition, is an individual trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees. Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.
