Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Points to consider when selecting a contractor:
- Do your research. Find out if they are licensed and insured in the appropriate field of work.
- Ask friends and family who they recommend.
- Check out the contractor's references.
- Contact the BBB for any information they have on the contractor.
- Ask to see photos of similar work they have performed.
- Never pay more than 1/3 of the project cost as a deposit to the contractor.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Customers should maintain a constant level of involvement in the project they are having completed. Don't assume the contractor will take care of certain aspects if they don't list them in the scope of work. Always read everything the contract states and ask for changes if they don't meet your requirements.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. 1. Are you licensed in the state of Maryland to perform this type of construction?
2. Are you fully insured to perform this scope of work?
3. Are you able to pull permits for this project?
4. Do you have an MHIC license?
5. Do you have references that I can contact?
6. Do you have recent construction photos of similar work that you have performed yourself?
7. Do you do the work yourself (with employees) or do you sub out the work?
8. When do you plan to begin/finish my project?
9. Do you charge by the hour or by the project?
10. Have you or any members of your crew committed any felonies in the last ten years or more?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Most customers are ready to have the project started when they contact us but some are just shopping around. This is fine.
The first thing homeowners/business owners need to do is research.
*Use the Internet and google how much the particular project may cost.
*Go to a home improvement store and price material. *Have your resources available to you.
*Know how long the project may take and schedule your time off (if applicable) around the work schedule.
