I hired Juwan to install Schluter Kerdi waterproofing membrane in a new shower I am renovating, along with new shower walls, shower floor, and marble tile for the bathroom floor and base. From the beginning, it was clear he was not a professional. He struggled throughout the installation, and the quality of the work raised serious concerns. The situation became more alarming when he began preparing to install the bathroom floor tile. In a 5-gallon bucket, he mixed an entire bag of Schluter All-Set but made it extremely watery, closer to a soup-like consistency than proper thinset. He then spilled some of this mixture onto tile that had not even been installed yet, ruining the new tile I had purchased. At that point, I stopped him respectfully and explained that I was not satisfied with the work. Our agreement was $1,000 for the full job, but because he had not even installed any tile, I offered $300 for the day. He became upset and disrespectful, so I raised the offer to $400 to be fair. He then tried to turn the situation into an issue of racial discrimination, which was completely untrue. I made it clear that the issue was the quality of the work, not anything else, and I still intended to pay him despite the damage and lack of progress. He threatened to call the police, and I told him he was free to do so. I called as well. When the police arrived, he ultimately accepted the $400. He also admitted he was “only a handyman,” which made it even more concerning that he agreed to take on a specialized waterproofing and tile installation job. If he was not qualified, he should have been upfront from the start. He also left a mess throughout my home, stained my front door rug, and failed to use any protective coverings before beginning work. I do NOT recommend hiring this individual. He is not knowledgeable in proper shower or tile work and the experience was unprofessional from start to finish.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience. While I regret that we were unable to reach a mutual agreement regarding the project, I want to clearly outline the sequence of events and the professionalism of the service I provided. I accepted the job based on the scope and pricing listed in your original Thumbtack request (see screenshots). Upon my arrival, you requested additional tasks while also attempting to renegotiate the price to an amount significantly below what we had initially agreed upon. You also declined to provide a deposit. As scheduled, I arrived at 8:00 AM to begin the first phase of the project. That phase involved installing the Schluter-KERDI waterproofing system, which I completed in accordance with manufacturer guidelines. During the work, concerns were raised after you referenced YouTube videos related to the tasks being performed. While such videos can be helpful, they are not a substitute for hands-on experience and proper installation standards. As soon as you expressed dissatisfaction, I paused all work immediately and addressed your concerns directly. Unfortunately, we could not reach a resolution, resulting in the stoppage of work. My goal in every project is to operate with integrity, transparency, and professionalism. Our original agreement was for $1,225 in labor for the full job. Upon meeting in person, you requested a lower price despite expanding the scope of work. To ensure the financial disagreement was resolved promptly and properly documented, I contacted law enforcement. The matter was settled on-site. I understand that not every working relationship will be the right fit. I stand by the quality of the work completed and the professionalism shown throughout our interaction. I encourage prospective clients to review my many positive ratings, which reflect my reliability, skill, and commitment to customer satisfaction across a wide range of projects. P.S. While I am certain I did not ruin your floors or materials. Schluter-KERDI ALL-SET mortar can be wiped away with the application of common household items, such as olive or coconut oil.
