About
Academy Dog Training by Haywood has had its roots here in the DC area for over 40 years! The Academy has sought to transform people's understanding that even a simple walk is a potential adventure for their pup and them. We seek to teach, both canine and human how to better communicate and learn using our 3 step balanced approach to training.
Whether working with puppies or aggressive dogs, we have stood by our mission to maximize the quality of life for all dogs and their families through education. To date, the Academy has brought over 3000 dogs and their families closer together through training and physical fitness! If that relationship is not healthy then another dog is sent to a shelter or worse. We are here to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Haywood is excellent for any training needs. They are very patient, friendly, and caring and always ready to help. My dog pulled constantly on the leash and did not listen well when called. I noticed big differences even after the first lesson. I highly recommend Haywood's service

We've enjoyed working with Haywood. He can get my dog to do anything! We aren't done with training yet but we are well on the way.

I had a great experience working with Mr. Haywood he does more than traindogs but the owner as well. My dog Rocko was dog aggressive because of fear. But in less that 3 classes in he was better! He was sitting next to dogs and he has never done that not even as a puppy. This is worth the money and the time. If you do what Mr. Haywood says your dog will come out better!

I just wrapped up the basic obedience course with my german shepherd mix, and she is a different dog! Chai was aggressive, impulsive, reactive, and terrified of kids. In our evaluation, she was barking and snarling at a stuffed dog in their office. By the end of of the training, she was happily following instructions in a group class of over 10 dogs. The biggest thing we're walking away with is the tools to succeed. I can't recommend Haywood and his staff highly enough, they're worth every penny.

Mr. Haywood and his dogtrainers could not be any nicer. Our Wheaten Terrier is much smarter then we thought she was and is listening to us better then we could have imagined. We have also continued to use their services for boarding when we are away. We have been super happy with the results and on going work.

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Our prices are set depending on the training program selected. The Academy offers several different training programs that will suit the needs of your pet and your schedule. Please review our website and this will give you details about each training program. The evaluation is your first step to getting a professional to evaluate your dog and to ask you questions about your goals for training. Thank you and it will be a pleasure meeting you.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Each puppy / dog is different. Each owner has a set of goals they want accomplished. Before any training starts, we must evaluate the dog and ask the owners very detail questions about their dog and what their goals are for training. This evaluation takes about one hour and is done at our facility. The evaluation is free.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Every year I take atleast 20 hours of dog behavioral courses, 10 hours of hands on skills in different training techniques and teach continuing education classes to Pet Professional trainers.
