Introduction: A gifted string teacher, Manuel De La Luz exudes confidence in his profession of music education. From the start, Manuel knew his passion and talent lay in teaching; with this clear goal in mind, he pursued his music training at VanderCook College of Music where he benefited from their dual emphasis on teaching and performance. While at VanderCook, Manuel specialized in violin under renowned violist Dr. Hall, with a focus on the coordination technique codified by Karen Tuttle. Beyond violin, Manuel also utilized his time at VanderCook to be trained in both teaching and performing viola, cello, and piano. During this time, he also fell in love with the guitar, and with his knowledge of violin playing, quickly mastered standard repertoire within three years. Through his self-taught experience, Manuel has developed an innovative approach to guitar. By transferring methods he learned on bowed string instruments to the guitar, Manuel’s approach has gained outstanding results among his students. Specifically, by teaching students to apply Karen Tuttle’s coordination technique to guitar performance, they are able to reach levels beyond the technical aspect of playing a musical instrument. Through 6 years’ experience teaching both privately and in the classroom, Manuel’s communication and attention to detail have evolved to produce a very effective teaching style.
