During a late night run to Quality Dairy I was stopped by a State Trooper for "Improperly displayed registration", i.e.: tinted license plate cover. The normal documentation was asked for, which I provided along with my CPL and I informed the trooper that I had two firearms in the vehicle.
As the trooper was back at his vehicle running my information, two Ingham County Sheriff Deputy vehicles pulled up blocking my vehicle in from the front. The trooper came back to my window with both sheriff deputies and informed me that my CPL was expired, because of a PPO, and that the PPO prohibited me from firearms. Which I acknowledged having the PPO but that it in fact did not prohibit me from buying, selling, purchasing, owning, or transporting firearms; that it was clearly signed by the judge not prohibiting me at a all.
Regardless of what the certified PPO signed by a judge stated, the trooper arrested me and took me to jail. I was charged with 2x Carrying Concealed Firearms both with a term (5)years.
While being retired law enforcement myself, I was confident that I had not broken the law, that I in fact had followed the law, and additionally that the agencies involved had made several mistakes along the way.
Regardless of the situation, or your prior history if you are facing felony charges and are going before a judge, you need an attorney who is informed, educated, well versed in the courtroom, and professional, but also personable. When I first met Mr. Ron Berry he quickly filled all those requirements, he listened intently, asked the right questions, gave feedback, and asked me to assist when he needed me. Mr Berry assured me that I was in fact within my rights, that I was not guilty, and that he believed in me.
We appeared in court and Mr. Berry went to work, within approx., (15)minutes the case was dismissed. While this felt like a victory it was short lived. Within a month a warrant was issued for my arrest for the same two charges. I turned my self in, bonded out, went back to court with Mr. Berry to resolve this once and for all. While the prosecuting attorney offered a plea bargain of lesser charges, that would have been a good deal for someone that was guilty, I chose to plead not guilty and go back before a judge. After returning to the courtroom, Mr Berry again went to work, presenting the truthfull factual events, the certified legal documentation, and my belief that he was the man to get this set right. Which is exactly what he did, my case was dismissed with prejudice and I was free of these charges once and for all. Mr. Ron Berry is truly a good man, that is doing exactly what he is meant to do; I am grateful to have met him, thankful for the services he provided; and additionally my family was blessed to have such a good person stand by our side and fight for us.
