FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I got into this profession by complete accident. I continued to borrow my brother-in-law's DSLR to photograph my children in between portrait sessions, (with a chain studio). I continued to "borrow" it longer and longer, learning everything I could about shooting manually. My husband surprised me with my own DSLR a year later, which was an incredible surprise because I had recently quit my day job to stay at home with our kiddos and the budget did not really support such an expense. Soon I had others requesting sessions; in 2009 after almost a year of portfolio building with friends and family, (and anyone else who would let me hone my skills), I registered my business, I was licensed and insured, and I placed my first ad in a local newspaper. I was terrified of rejection. It took 6 calls to my husband to muster the courage to place that advertisement, but the interest in my work continued and I opened my retail studio 10 months later. =]
- What types of customers have you worked with?
I most often photograph Families, Newborns, Children, and High School Seniors. I do not photograph all day events any longer, but I do continue to offer Wedding Day Sessions, (portraits of the Bride and Groom either the day of or soon after the wedding).
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
The most important advice I would give to a customer is to ensure the photographer's style is what you are looking for in your vision. It is best to find someone who already photographs in your style versus finding someone and then asking them to change how they shoot or how they edit. Comb through websites, look at updated galleries on social media platforms, and then determine who best fits your personal preferences. =]
