Introduction: Hello! I have a warm personality, and I'm great at working with students of all types, ages 4 to 60+. My students have fun and learn quickly, because I meet them where they are. They can expect to play music they enjoy while developing great technique and reading skills. I teach how to learn music by example, how to read sheet music, play solos, improvise, and how to play with a band. Whether it’s your first lesson or you’re preparing for an audition, I’m ready to help you achieve your goals. Former students have studied at University of Michigan, University of Southern California, Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University, Central Michigan University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. First lesson is free! I offer flexible scheduling and payment options, please ask about my discounts. I offer thirty and sixty minute lessons, remotely and at my home studio in Lake Orion, Michigan. Here’s the process we’ll go through every weekly lesson. 1. Warm-up. Review how to use the right technique, posture, and hand position. Piano students will review the scales, chords, and arpeggios in the key of the song they're working on. Drummers will play eight on a hand, 3-2 clave, and other basic patterns along with great music at just the right speed. (slowly) 2. Review music from the previous lesson. 3. Learn new music, or keep working on the same. 4. Performance. Before your lesson is over, you’ll be playing today’s music with confidence on your own. 5. Take notes. 5. Daily Practice. 6. Repeat!

Drum Lessons

I am a 57-year-old female wanna -be rockstar in Cleveland Ohio. It’s always been a dream of mine to play the drums and after getting a set for Christmas last year I guess I had no choice. Lol I absolutely love my classes. Nick is a very good educator, he is very patient and he makes it fun. My hour lesson seems to go by so fast, and I found myself always wanting to practice. Nick has his zoom platform set up quite thoroughly. We can interact with each other as well as the paperwork in reviewing the notes. I do not feel that I would get a better class in a normal classroom environment, and that is very nice with our situation today. I highly recommend Nick Matthews as your instructor you can’t go wrong! 🥁

Piano Lessons

At 31, I decided I wanted to pick up the piano again after 15 years of not playing. Nick was super supportive the whole way and made sure I knew that the lessons would go in the direction I wanted them to. I really enjoyed working with him. He had me working on my posture and my technique. He also taught me music theory and always listened to what I had to say. At one point, I hurt myself during practice and he insisted that we take some time off so I could heal (keep your wrists straight, kids!). He gave me some exercises I could do to keep my muscles limber and even consulted with another teacher to make sure he was doing everything he could. All in all, Nick is a great teacher and a lot of fun. 10/10, would take lessons again.

Piano Lessons

Nick was my private percussion teacher in preparation for my college auditions (from mid-2017 through mid-2018), as well as some supplementary lessons over the summer after my freshman year of college (summer 2019). He was an amazing teacher and he helped me to be extremely prepared for my auditions. I came in with literally no four-mallet experience and almost no rudimental snare experience, but with Nick's help I was able to ace all four of my auditions! He clearly has a great love and respect for his craft.
