Introduction: Hello! I'm Abby. I am a Macalester College graduate and have been working as a professional tutor and college counselor for over six years. I also have a Master's Certificate in College Counseling from the University of California San Diego. I got my start in the tutoring world through working at Lindamood-Bell Learning Center during college, and I quickly discovered my passion for helping students reach their educational goals. With experience in tutoring anything from reading and comprehension to the SAT and ACT, I enjoy helping students of all ages reach their full potentials. My area of expertise today is all things college prep. My areas of expertise: - College admissions consulting - ACT test prep - SAT test prep - General essay writing By choosing to work with me, you will receive high-quality, one-on-one tutoring and counseling services that ensure students are fully prepared for applying and transitioning to college. My goal is to help students reach their own unique post-secondary education goals, so my tutoring methods and strategies are individualized with your goals in mind. Whether you have three weeks to prepare for the SAT or plan to take the ACT in six months and want to get a jump start on your preparation, I'll craft the perfect plan for you, your goals, and your timeline. College counseling looks different for each student, so I come up with a plan that is individualized to each student that I work with. For some students, this will include minimal support reviewing application essays. For other students this may include more focused guidance through steps such as ongoing test prep, identifying schools that will be a good fit for the student, narrowing down the list of schools being applied to, brainstorming and working through personal statements and supplemental essays, completing the steps of the applications together, and more. Because of this background, I am trained in their highly effective Visualizing & Verbalizing and Seeing Stars programs for literacy and reading comprehension tutoring as well. Similarly, I have a lot of experience working with students with learning disabilities both through Lindamood-Bell and with the college admissions process, which can have some unique hurdles for students requiring specific accommodations. When I'm not busy working with students you can find me curled up with a good book or traveling to warm places. Feel free to reach out at any time - I'm accepting new students, and I do my best to be very responsive to all requests. I'd be happy to help you reach your goals! -Abby Purfeerst, Founder The Prepared Student

Abby is amazing! I went to her after I didn't receive the results I wanted with another tutor. She has been helping me with my ACT for the past few months, and I already have seen progress. She goes through every problem thoroughly and always make sure you understand. In addition, she has been helping me with my college applications as well. My college essays and writing prompts have exceeded my expectations. Highly recommend!!!!

Working with Abby has been amazing. She is positive, proactive and has really tapped into our daughter’s (sometimes reluctant) spirit to get things done. She has been a wealth of knowledge on schools that would appeal to my daughter, growing her application pool from 3-4 initial to over 10. And even though we started late with Abby, she was able to get our daughter organized and focused to complete applications for early admission. She has been very flexible, working around a busy teenager’s work, social and school schedule. Some sessions even on Sunday. We interviewed multiple online coaches, and Abby stood out for a number of reasons. She was able to delve deep and quickly into what our daughter needed, accomplishing a lot in short amount of time. She keeps us updated after every session with detailed notes and organized next steps. Highly recommend.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Rates - There are no hidden fees, and the hourly rate includes all materials used during lessons, as well as additional practice homework for the student to complete between sessions. There are some package options for test prep to help make prolonged tutoring more affordable. Payments - I can be flexible about payment methods. I frequently accept payment via credit card, Stripe, PayPal, and Venmo. Let me know what works best for you! First Session Guarantee - I always offer a first session guarantee, so families who aren't sure about tutoring can give it a try risk free. If a student is not happy with how their first session with me goes, I will not charge for that session. Session Notes - I make a point of keeping parents in the loop about what we're working on during each lesson. I'll frequently check in and provide a written summary of what we focused on during the lesson or some feedback to keep the parents knowledgeable about their student's work and progress. Cancellation Policy - I ask for at least 6 hours notice before cancelling or rescheduling a session. If a session is cancelled less than 6 hours before the session is to occur, I may charge for the full session. All no-shows will be charged in full.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Our new client process begins by first communicating with you to make sure that we gather all of the necessary background information to make sure that we can help your student. This includes not only information about your student's previous ACT and SAT scores, but also information regarding your student's overall academic experience, goals, and more. We then place your student with a specific tutor from our team based on what your student's weakest areas are and his/her goals. Your student will then work with our expert tutor for the recommended timeframe leading up to test day. Parents can communicate directly with the assigned tutor to get information on student progress and to schedule sessions.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Our founder, Abby, worked as a professional tutor at Lindamood-Bell Learning Process in Edina, Minnesota while obtaining her Bachelor's degree from Macalester College, an academically rigorous college in St. Paul, Minnesota. During her time as a professional tutor, Abby enjoyed helping students meet their education goals as they related specifically to literacy and reading comprehension, as well as college test prep and essay writing. Later, Abby began freelance tutoring as an ACT tutor throughout the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Abby achieved a perfect score on the English section of the ACT while in high school, as well as high scores on all other sections of the exam. She found that this level of knowledge combined with her teaching experience and abilities proved effective in assisting students preparing for the ACT exam. As The Prepared Student has grown, Abby has recruited other young adults with similar backgrounds to work one-on-one with students preparing for the ACT and SAT exams, as well as the transition to college. All of The Prepared Student's expert tutors have obtained or are in the midst of obtaining degrees from prestigious colleges and universities throughout the Twin Cities. Some even hold Master's degrees and Ph.D's.
