Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry & Lapidary
Introduction: The Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry and Lapidary, located just outside of Asheville NC, provides a location to teach those who wish to develop jewelry and lapidary skills in a non-competitive, supportive environment. Skill level is of no importance here. The school is geared towards the individual student, whether a raw beginner, a struggling apprentice, someone who needs to learn a particular skill or to try out a tool before purchasing, or even the rusty jeweler who hasn't created anything in 20 years. Students are taught at their own skill level in small classes, maximum 6 students, in an actual jewelry studio at $15 per hour plus materials. The other option is private, one-on-one classes at $30 per hour plus materials. Students have the opportunity to learn jewelry fabrication techniques, such as soldering, forging, bezel setting, rolling mill techniques, cold connections and use of a jeweler's saw. Wax carving and lost wax vacuum casting and mold making is another class series offered. Beginning lapidary is also taught here where the student learns to take a slice of rock rough and turn it into a cabochon, ready for setting in a jewelry design.
