James illustrated an entire comic for me in 2008 and I was impressed by his attention to detail, his suggestions for a better story, and the way he altered his style to be more '50s "world of tomorrow" to match the needs of the book. His final design of the key character, a failed genetic experiment, needed to be both grotesque and sympathetic, and he really came through. I can't imagine Adam Among the Gods without James' illustrations. I've worked with a lot of artists in my 35 years producing publications and I highly recommend James as a dependable, skilled and conscientious partner for any illustration project.

James E. Lyle is a true professional. While he's extremely talented as an artist, just as importantly, he meets deadlines and exceeds at taking notes (the latter resultant from his education and ability to speak to people on their level). Highest recommendation!

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Normally I create comic book style artwork (a.k.a. graphic novel) for clients around the globe. This involves creating pencil thumbnails, followed by tight pencil drawings. Finally, these are redrawn in black ink and scanned for reproduction. The challenge with creating this sort of work is that of carrying the story in the art alone (so that it is possible to understand what is happening without any text at all), so that when text is present it only adds to the audience's understanding. Comics have been called "acting on paper" and that's the skill that I bring to this medium.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Know that creative services are time consuming. Besides the amount of time it takes to come up with a creative solution to the problem, being a one-man studio your project will have to be worked in to the schedule and so patience on your part is required.
