Most folks haven’t spent 40 years in around construction industry and aren’t retired to watch everything. Plus, roofing is scary because is expensive. If that is, you this is contractor to pick. He’s honest up front and wants to deliver a quality product! His crew is excellent, polite and go out their way to make it all go smoothly. I didn’t know Gerald until he quoted this project but would use him again without hesitation. This a long detailed review provided by an old construction guy to help homeowners.
The number of contractors that wanted to quote through Thumbtack was extremely high. A few simply threw out a number based on internet photos available views of my house. I found these to be high and assumed these contractors have a lot of work on the books and don’t want to invest time.
Although, I normally only take 3 quotes on this job I listened 6 contractors. All of them were professional and knowledgeable. Each gave me additional knowledge on what made a quality job. The pricing broke into two groups with approximately 20% difference quoting the same products.
Save on fell into the lower cost group but wasn’t the lowest priced. Gerald brought many years of experience as builder talked about each area, I had interest in from 6 nails per shingle, ice guard distance from the overhang area, and length of nails to use over my screened in porch. He was the only contractor who wanted a down payment. This didn’t influence my decision because it was short time from contract execution until work started only a few days and the down payment matched the cost of materials.
Once the contract was signed the communications was excellent. The job got pushed back on day because of weather. He called the evening before and told us, which was fine, really don’t want my roof open when there a strong chance of rain. All materials arrived including dumpster as promised and found both drivers to have excellent knowledge about where to put things per his drawings to them.
Yesterday the crew arrived a little behind because of needing to pick up a metal break to complete another small project on the list. They arrived in one vehicle which meant my parking areas weren’t taken up by the crew of 6. The crew was diverse 4 men and 2 women. This was well organized crew and had everything they needed to do the job. They tarped my property as promised and had the roof stripped in one hour. As promised Gerald was here and they examined the screened back porch and determined the safest way not to harm my pine board ceiling was to hand drive ¾ inch nails. This represented additional labor cost and he quickly told no additional charges were being asked for since he knew this was a potential when he bid it. (for readers who don’t know construction this is rare)
No job goes exactly as planned and the ice shield was applied to normal 6 feet and not what was agreed to. I texted the picture and he immediately replied the situation which was handled within minutes.
My roof 21 square roof was completed by 6 PM one day! My yard was cleaned, everything back in place, and he was paid and off to the next one.

My overall experience with Save-On Construction was more than satisfactory from start to finish for all the above-mentioned reasons. My house is over a hundred years old with a fairly steep pitch, and it had 2 layers of asphalt shingles that needed to be stripped first. As it turned out, there was extensive damage to the rake board, rafter and roof deck that required replacement. I mas most impressed by the skill of the crew members who were able to make the necessary repairs and still finish the entire job--cleanup included--in one day. Last but not least, the price was very competitive especially considering the necessary repairs--great value.
