About
We are an "old school" traditional karate dojo. Serious enough to make teaching our art a profession; idealistic enough to not make it a retail business. This, in itself, isn't so extraordinary. That we are rapidly becoming a rarity absolutely is. We believe in the realization of each student's potential. Sounds nice, huh? Some love us for it; others, not so much. You see, we not only believe in it, we're pretty much insistent about it. We train our instructors. To teach. Karate. Continuously. One other thing: We DO turn people away. We choose our students every bit as much as they choose us. Not everyone who calls really understands what they're looking for. With us, they either "find a home" or, at least, find that answer.

I have been studying at East Morris Karate Academy for 27 years. In that time, I have overcome many obstacles in my life, both mental and physical. Were it not for the teachings and support of my teacher Mr. Musco and my dojo mates I would not be writing this today. Through strengthened confidence and self discipline I was able to deal with the issues handed me in life and come out the other side with only a few nicks and scratches, but not shattered. The most significant of these issues was cancer thirteen years ago. I continued my training at the dojo throughout my treatment, albeit with some necessary adjustments. I was left with many physical conditions due to the chemotherapy. At no time was I left behind because I was unable to do a move. An adjustment was made so that the outcome of the original technique was achieved, but with something I was capable of doing. Injuries, physical ailments, decreased mental capacity – I’ve lived through them all during my time at the dojo. There is nothing that should stop you if you really want to do something. Mr. Musco always told us that goals are dreams with dates on them. Here at East Morris Karate Academy, your goals are achievable and dreams do come true.

I have been a student at the East Morris Karate Academy for 24 years. I drive a 130-mile round trip from Long Island to train and teach. I call the dojo, and what I have learned there, my "backbone." We have a unique teacher. I've never seen anyone so fierce in their integrity; so hungry in their quest for knowledge, and hardworking in applying that knowledge to useful purpose; and so dedicated to helping others. In modern American society, many of us are encouraged to define ourselves according to how we compare in looks, money, and athletic performance. Mr. Musco dares us to go deeper, and look inside ourselves. It can be intimidating, but if you have the guts to do it, it can be enlightening.

My training at the East Morris Karate Academy (EMKA) forms one of the foundations of my life. I have been a member of the Dojo for 28 years and I have been an Instructor there since 1996. The time commitment alone shows how valuable I consider my membership at EMKA. One of the reasons I joined the Dojo (at age 12) was to learn Self-Defense (from bullies). What I got goes far beyond that (though I have learned many effective self-defense techniques). The training gave me the self-confidence to avoid bullying without any physical altercations. This is just one of the many skills I have incorporated into my life through training at the Dojo. I learned how the effort you put in pays off in the results, I leaned discipline, awareness, courage, integrity and courtesy. Upon becoming an Instructor, the training only expanded. My continued training as an Instructor has given me lessons in leadership, planning, marketing and of course teaching. One of the unique things about this Dojo is how focused the training of instructors is on effective teaching techniques. I use things I’ve learned at EMKA everyday. I value the camaraderie between the students and my fellow instructors. I thank my Teacher Mr. Musco for his efforts at developing such an extraordinary place.

I came to the dojo over 20 years ago, on the recommendation of my then instructor who was moving away and closing his school. The best referral I've ever had. I felt welcomed into the community immediately and have been enjoying learning and doing ever since. The traditional martial arts, and this dojo in particular, are a great tool for studying yourself and managing your life - as well as being a challenging and interesting workout. Mr. Musco and the instructors put immense effort into making sure the regular classes are never quite the same and that there is always something new to discover. As we advance in our training East Morris Karate Academy keeps us looking outward. Summer camps and weekend retreats give us the opportunity to train with more students and instructors from around the world. East Morris Karate Academy is what a dojo should be, a community of friends who work out and learn together. Kevin (Student)

Martial arts have been a part of my life for nearly 30 years. I have studied in many different schools over the years. For nearly the least 15 years, I have studied at the East Morris Karate Academy. Prior schools taught martial arts strickly in a physical combat point of view. East Morris Karatae Academy does teach such physical self defense, but also teaches martial arts as a way of life. Very few of us have to actually defend our lives in hand to hand combat. The training at East Morris Karate Academy help us learn how to defend ourselves against the continual stresses of life that we all face.
