Hillary Murtha

I bring a high level of academic training, together with dedicated effort to connect with my students, to my tutoring work. “Always connect,” the mantra of novelist EM Forster, is mine, too. Connecting involves recognizing the person, having patience, paying close attention, and relating with them both as a mentor and simply as one human being to another. I give individual attention to each student I work with. As to my educational background, I hold a Ph.D in history, with a minor field in literature, from the University of Delaware. I also have a master’s degree in art history from Bard College. My B.A., in art, is from Rutgers University. I am a published writer, with works ranging from scholarly articles to advertising copy. I have experience editing and helping students in high school, college and graduate school with their writing. I have tutored students from third grade through high school, and I’ve taught undergraduate courses at Rutgers and Kean Universities. I tutor elementary school students in general subjects, and students in middle school and above in history, social studies, literature and writing. Beyond my teaching experiences, I have spent many years as a museum professional, developing exhibitions and educational programs. I find that visual materials and physical artifacts make history more tangible and accessible to students. I bring my skills at “teaching by showing” to my work with the students I tutor. I provide references from satisfied clients upon request.
