My wife and I were throwing a birthday party for my daughter's 1st Birthday this past Saturday, November 3rd, 2012. It was to be a Halloween party, since my daughter was born on Halloween and we were going to have it in a tent at my house in West Orange. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy hit, causing a loss of power for 5 days - not to mention many trees that fell. I canceled the party on Wednesday morning (1.5 days after the storm finished) and alerted Catered to U. I was hoping they would return my 25% deposit (about $1300+) b/c it was an act of God that caused the cancellation and I felt that they probably did not do much towards the party. They refused, saying they were ready to throw the party and that they had purchased items for the party. I highly doubt (although I have no proof) that they purchased anything because they are located within 5 minutes of my house and if my house didn't have power, I doubt they had any power. Meaning any food purchased (i.e.: meat), would have gone bad (although they claim they have a backup generator for refrigerators). I asked for receipts for the purchased food, but never got any. At the end of the day, every vendor we had booked (i.e.: tent, magician, photographer, party planner, etc) returned deposits (if applicable) with the understanding that the Hurricane was the cause of the cancellation. Now I am forced to fight the charge through my credit card. I think it is terrible that a company would be so shameless to take advantage of people during such a time.
