Luis is a charming young man, but charm and youth can lead to overconfidence. We experienced the results of this: I hired Luis + his 2-person waitstaff for an important 4 hour art world (MoMA) event. But they arrived nearly 2 hours late - too late for (1) setup, (2) cocktail hour (bartending and passing apps), and (3) mid-party changeover (lay out buffet, set up tables and dinner seating). These fairly complicated tasks were instead performed by surprised family members who had come as guests. And of course, by me. There was confusion, embarrassment and waste. During these hours, Luis sent a text promising to "make it all good" by working "extra hours" (huh?) and by working "diligently" (was there an alternative plan?). Luis demonstrated very limited perspective, both in that text and once he arrived: Eager to make things right, he tried to do everything at once. He did it all himself, rather than direct his two (inexperienced, but very well dressed) young workers. He abandoned his bar to serve drinks and bus tables, while the waitstaff just stood against a wall looking frightened. Embarrassed by the lateness, Luis directed his attention towards me personally , again missing the big picture. I hired him to serve my guests, not flatter me and mix me drinks. I see in Luis, a man with many gifts and huge potential. But on Saturday, he revealed that he still has important lessons to learn.
