Introduction

Whether you are first learning an instrument or honing your craft, there are many ways that I can help you. I have been teaching for over a decade, and have helped students achieve their musical goals. My primary instrument is guitar, but I have almost lifelong background in playing piano. I also offer instruction in theory, composition/songwriting, and production for those interested, as one of my favorite aspects of teaching is helping people to express themselves creatively. FAQ Q. Where do you teach? A. I am currently teaching online exclusively via Skype or Zoom. Q. Do you teach group lessons? A. Lessons are for individuals, as I find that it works best. I may be willing to make exceptions to this, but it would only be after also having individual lessons with each student. Q. Do online lessons really work? A. Yes! While there are some specific limitations (we can't play together at the same time), the format allows for a wide range of techniques and tools that I have seen work great for a wide range of students. Q. Do you teach beginners? A. Absolutely! I particularly enjoy working with beginners because it involves laying down the foundations that are going to set you up for success. I am grateful that students of mine have said that I am patient and that they don't feel judged. Q. Do you teach intermediate/advanced players? A. Absolutely! I have worked with students who have been playing on the timeline of decades with great results.

I’ve had a great experience working with Derek. He is very patient and great at explaining things about guitar as well as giving analogies with other things and connecting it back to guitar. He created a very easygoing and comfortable atmosphere where it’s ok to make mistakes. He shows a clear passion for what he’s doing and it reflects in his teaching, taking lessons with him are well worth it!

Working with Derek was always such a positive experience! He is patient and kind and knows how to use different analogies so I could better understand guitar terminology. It is always difficult learning something new but Derek made it less intense and created an atmosphere where I gained the confidence instead of frustration while playing! Derek has such knowledge of music and a passion to play which is so clearly evident through his teaching during lessons! Truly so grateful to work with Derek.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing is $35 for 30 minutes, $45 for 45 minutes, and $55 for 60 minutes. I can offer discounted rates for students who are not able to pay the full rate, as I try my best to not let pricing be a barrier to learning. I may can also offer discounts for students who would like to pay for multiple lessons upfront.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I start working with students by having an introductory lesson/consultation, to make sure we are a good fit, that I understand your goals and am confident that I can help you acheive them, and that you are comfortable working with me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My largest trove of experience for teaching has been teaching guitar, piano, and bass, for the past 13 years. Prior to teaching professionally, I studied music at Hobart college, focused on theory and composition, tutored many of the classes, and recieved the D'Angelo award upon graduating.
