Introduction: My work stands out from others because when I work with schools I am extremely thorough. I do not do "drive bys". My assembly program begins before I get to a school. I will send a short introductory message to the students before my visit to prep them for my social challenges. When I speak at a school I follow up with the students by spending the day at the school and visiting their lunch periods and then pushing into classrooms as well. Of course if a school only wants an assembly with no follow up I will provide that. I love working with middle school children and high school students as they try to make sense of the fast moving world around them. I especially enjoy it when I get to ask the students in their classrooms what affected them about my assembly and they are able to look me in the eye and tell me that I made them want to reach out and help others who are struggling either in school or at home.

David Flood spoke at our school recently and did an outstanding job. He was able to relate to the students and connect with them on a personal level. His family and the personal experiences that he shared made him relevant to our 7th and 8th grade students. I would recommend him for any presentations within the middle school age group.

David Flood created a rapport with all of our students from the moment he stepped in the door. From the popular students to those with substance abuse issues to our special needs students, David made time to speak with our students before and after his dicussion, staying for hours after to speak with students. it was refreshing to have a speaker come in that didn't just show up and collect their check. David doesn't approach the students as a lecturer. He both laughs and cries during his talk and though his stories, we as a school community followed the same emotional roller coaster. Our students were so impressed, they all wanted David to come back. As a staff, we have already discussed his return. Well worth the investment. David takes as long as needed, spending time in the school, talking openly and informally with students he walks by. He has already changed the lives of many of our students. I personally watched him help 5 students individually with their struggles at home. And that was during his informal walks. Imagine what his discussion is like. Thanks again David. FAQs

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I constantly read about suicide prevention and take online courses along the lines of social and emotional learning. I have taken several BOCES courses about bullying. I have also attended several mental health and wellness seminars in my area put on by the state.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have a son with autism who used to eat lunch alone in middle school. From this stems a challenge that I give to children when I speak. I also have a best friend who's daughter committed suicide. I am a member of the drug and alcohol task force in my town so addiction is something that I speak about as well.
