Extremely Disappointing Experience – Do Not Recommend I want to share our very unfortunate and frustrating experience with A and C Builders, specifically with Daniel Penley, who claims to be the owner. We initially found A and C Builders on Thumbtack while exploring contractors for a bathroom remodel. Daniel presented himself as genuine and professional, promising quality work at a competitive price. He agreed to remodel both of our bathrooms for a price significantly lower than others in the market and even offered to handle a few additional fixes at little or no cost. He also mentioned he provided seasonal landscaping and snow removal services for around $1,500. While we were still finalizing plans for the remodel, our grass had overgrown, so we reached out to Daniel for a one-time mowing service. He quoted $200 and committed to coming by at 10:00 AM the following Monday. However, he didn’t arrive until 1:00 PM. Upon arriving, he claimed his lawn mower’s belt had broken and said he needed to go to Lowe’s to get a replacement. He also suggested adding mulch to the landscaping for an additional $150. I agreed, and he offered to pick up 60 bags of mulch while at Lowe’s, sending me photos so I could select a color. He claimed the mulch bags were $5.98 each and that there was a Father’s Day discount—but when I asked for a receipt, it took him two hours to send it, and the pricing was unclear. When I pushed for clarification, he said he had a special business account with Lowe’s that only itemizes receipts annually—something that seemed suspicious. After inspecting the work, we realized very little had been done. The grass hadn’t been mowed, and only a small amount of mulch had been laid. He returned the next day, mowed the lawn, and laid some additional mulch—but from our security footage, we saw he only used about 10 of the 30 extra mulch bags he purchased, stashing the rest in his truck. He then told us he needed another 30 bags, assuring us he’d reimburse us for anything unused. He also added a $100 delivery fee for the previous mulch bags, which had never been discussed beforehand. We paid for the additional bags, expecting the project to be completed. He promised to return the next morning to finish the work and said the final $150 (for labor) could be paid once we were satisfied. Instead, he left our property a mess: old mulch and grass had been dumped into our exterior drains—even though we had clearly asked him to dispose of it off the property. When I called to follow up, he answered and promised to return with a tractor to clean up. That was the last time I heard from him. He completely disappeared—stopped answering calls, never sent the final Lowe’s receipt, and ultimately blocked my number. He vanished without completing the job and took over $1,000 from us. Daniel may come across as friendly and persuasive, but he is not honest. He left us with a half-finished job, created more problems than he solved, and walked away with our money. In our opinion, this is a scam, and I strongly advise others to stay away from A and C Builders.
