FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Ever since I was young I have wanted to be a teacher, and so tutoring was the basis to becoming a teacher. Between tutoring and babysitting, I have been surrounded by children my whole life and I love to watch them grow up into successful human beings.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I recently took on a tutoring position for a student taking the Geometry regents. Although I was a math major, some of the concepts from high school were not touched upon in college. I wasn't afraid to take out books from the library and freshen up my skills, so I used my book during tutoring sessions and helped this student pass the exam. Since I had been away at college, I only got the opportunity to start helping him 4 weeks before the exam, so when I found out he got an 86 I was proud. "Eddie got an 86 on his exam; he is so happy he came dancing into my room to tell me." Text messages like these continue to motivate me to become a better tutor.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Find someone who is interested in the student and the family and not just the money. Although I tutor as a part time job (you've got to pay the bills somehow, right?), I enjoy getting to know my family on and off of an academic level. Don't settle for someone that isn't helping. Don't be afraid to tell someone that it isn't working out, because what you want is for your child to be successful, not to avoid hurting people's feelings.
