About
🎹 Piano Lessons I work with beginners through advanced players, including adults returning to piano, jazz students, and classically trained pianists looking to expand their skills. <How I Work With Students> We start by setting a clear, personal goal (for example: playing a jazz standard, accompanying a singer, composing an original piece, or preparing a classical work). From there, I: •Assess your current level and experience •Identify the specific skills needed to reach your goal •Break everything into manageable, practical steps Each lesson focuses on exactly what you should practice and how to practice efficiently, so progress feels steady and motivating. <Teaching Approach> With nearly three decades of piano experience and study with master musicians, I focus on efficient practice strategies and healthy technique that help you play with ease and confidence. My approach is structured but encouraging, and always adapted to each student’s learning style. Topics I Commonly Cover •Music theory •Improvisation •Ear training •Piano technique •Sight-reading •Jazz, classical, pop •Harmony, chords, voicings Lesson Rates 30 minutes – $45 45 minutes – $65 60 minutes – $80 *Online or in-person lesson at my studio in Queens NY 🎼 Piano Performance (Weddings & Events) Award-winning pianist offering solo piano, duo, or jazz trio performances. Ideal for: •Wedding ceremonies •Cocktail hours •Private parties & celebrations •Corporate events •Baby showers & special occasions I tailor the music to each event and can play a wide range of styles, including classical, jazz, pop, rock, Broadway, film scores, Disney classics, and holiday music. I’m always happy to take special song requests and adjust the vibe in real time to match the room. 🎥 Please refer to performance sample found on my profile page 🎓 Background & Experience I earned a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Manhattan School of Music. In 2014, I was awarded scholarships from the TOMODACHI Suntory Music Scholarship Fund and the Rotary Club of Japan to attend Berklee, where I studied with renowned musicians including Joanne Brackeen, Darren Barrett, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Billy Kilson. While at Berklee, I was selected to perform at the U.S.–Japan Council Annual Conference in Tokyo, attended by U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. I later recorded with Grammy Award–winning trumpeter Darren Barrett on his album But Beautiful “Time For Romance” (2018). In 2022, I performed with the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra at Dizzy’s Club Jazz at Lincoln Center, conducted by Jack Walrath. I have toured throughout the U.S. and Japan and continue to perform regularly in the New York area.

I can’t express enough how grateful I am for the lessons with Takeru. His deep expertise in classical and jazz music, as well as his profound understanding of harmony and piano techniques, is truly remarkable. Whenever I encounter difficulties with certain phrases or techniques, Takeru quickly identifies the issue and provides tailored exercises and unique learning strategies. Rather than simply telling me to “practice more,” he offers precise guidance on what to practice, how to practice, how often, and what mindset to adopt. His approach to music theory has not only enhanced my ability to analyze and understand music but has also improved my memorization skills—I can now play Bach’s fugue from memory! It has truly been life-changing. As a child, I was forced to learn classical piano and found it unappealing, feeling like mere finger exercises. However, Takeru has rekindled my love for playing music through his inspiring lessons. Studying with him has made me realize how interconnected all music genres are and has completely transformed my perspective on music. I’m excited to continue learning from him.

Oh my goodness, what a gift Takeru Saito is as a teacher. We’ve been working together twice a month for almost a year and he has guided me from wistful music lover to someone who can read music and reasonably play piano. I’m still a hopeful novice, and Takeru’s patience and attention to nuance in each lesson brings something valuable and workable and new for me to integrate, every time. These lessons continue to add meaning and joy to my life. We can learn new things throughout our lives - especially with a truly skilled, kind, and thoughtful teacher.

I have had several piano lessons with Takeru and am having a great time learning from him! Takeru is clearly a masterful pianist and also a great teacher. Takeru quickly assessed my level of play/knowledge and does well at covering topics/pieces that are around my level. He explains concepts in multiple different ways, which really helps me understand the music theory that we discuss. Takeru is very responsive and flexible around my schedule, and even did a lesson in person when I was visiting NYC! I look forward to my lesson every week!
