Introduction: Alot of music teachers are just interested in sheer quantity of students. They like to move at their pace, and often get frustrated with their students. I like to cater individually to the student's interest and pace. Learning an instrument can be difficult, and so my lessons are completely judgement free! I love being able to enrich people's lives through music. I enjoy the satisfaction of teaching someone a new song, and introducing them to a new type of music, and getting them excited about learning their instrument.

Mark Dover was my son Jordan's first clarinet teacher; they worked together for about two and a half years when Jordan was in middle school. (We would happily have continued with Mark if he had not moved out of town to attend graduate school.) Mark did a fabulous job. He made the lessons fun for Jordan, and he always kept me informed about Jordan's progress. I occasionally sat in on lessons and noticed that Mark was always positive and encouraging but nevertheless held Jordan to high standards. I enjoyed seeing their rapport. What I didn't realize until later (not being a musician myself) was that Jordan was getting a very solid introduction to the fundamentals of the clarinet. Those first years with Mark positioned him to succeed in a very well-regarded and competitive high school music program. By the end of his senior year, Jordan was first chair in both his high school's Symphony Band and the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association's All-State Band (of which he was a five-time member). He was also offered music scholarships at several different colleges. So yes, Mark is a great clarinet teacher. He is also a good, kind person. Two years after Mark moved away, we had a devastating death in the family. I will always be grateful that Mark came to visit Jordan to offer his condolences--and that he brought his clarinet! Nothing could have been more comforting than hearing the two of playing together again. My review in a nutshell: Mark's an outstanding clarinetist, a dedicated teacher, and an all-around good guy. I would hire him again in a second.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In the music field we are all constantly learning. Since finishing my Master's Degree in 2012 I still strive to be the best musician I can through endless hours of practicing and listening. I still take private lessons when I have the chance as well. We're students for life!

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

Since as long as I can remember I've been passionate about music. I knew that I wanted to do this for a living ever since I was 13. I was performing in a talent show at a music camp in Michigan, and the feeling I had when I was playing for the audience just gave me this visceral, gut feeling that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

Recently, two of my former students won the concerto competition at their high school. One of them will continue playing seriously, and the other is attending the University of Michigan School of Music to become a professional clarinetist! I started teaching her when she was 10 so to see her come such a long way and then decide that's what she wanted to do was a really rewarding feeling.
