Introduction: About Ms. Jenna I was a first grade teacher in a New York City public school in Chelsea for six years before becoming a reading specialist (grades K-4) in a top rated school district in Westchester, NY. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Childhood and Special Education (grades 1-6) from SUNY Geneseo and a Master’s degree in Literacy (birth-6th grade) from Teachers College at Columbia University. I am trained in Orton-Gillingham, which is a specialized, explicit and multisensory approach to teaching reading through phonics based instruction. Throughout my education and career, I have had experience teaching children of varying abilities across all elementary grade levels. Private Tutoring Services I specialize in teaching reading and writing to children, pre-kindergarten to 6th grade, using explicit and research-based approaches. I tailor my instruction to meet each individual child’s needs, but most importantly, I strive to make learning fun and engaging for young children! I provide all of my clients with a free 30-minute initial consultation to discuss your child’s current levels, learning needs, and learning style in order to ensure I am a good fit for your family. We will work together to establish goals and develop a personalized and targeted plan to strengthen your child’s literacy skills. Benefits of Private Tutoring The primary years are so important for fostering a positive attitude towards learning! Working one-on-one or in small groups provides students the individualized attention and practice necessary to be successful and confident in their abilities as a reader and writer. Children are able to learn and grow at their own pace, which can help them to develop a growth mindset. Once children have a strong foundation, they have the tools and confidence necessary to be successful in school and with their learning. I am excited by every opportunity to help a child become an independent and life-long learner! Message me to plan a time to chat about next steps in helping your child develop a love for reading.

Jenna is an amazing tutor. My son needed help to stay on track with his reading because of his dyslexia. She took a comprehensive assessment of where he was in his reading and moved forward with a plan that worked for him. He instantly clicked with her and was excited about tutoring. She made sure he stayed engaged and focused - not an easy feat given his ADHD. We love Jenna!

Jenna came into our lives with a magic wand! Our daughter was not a strong reader and was not very interested in reading. Jenna took her under her wings, supported her and taught her the necessary strategies and skills to master reading in the most supportive manner. My daughter (6 years old at the time) flew through reading levels after working with Jenna and began to love reading! She was reading books voluntarily! I never thought that would happen. We couldn’t be more thankful for Jenna’s skills, love for kids, and kind and patient disposition. We highly recommend her for all children!!

Jenna was very engaging with my 7 year old daughter! They worked on complex math concepts and Jenna had a variety of strategies and worked with my daughter to determine which work best for her. My daughter is not a fan of math but these tutoring sessions were fun, engaging and she learned a lot on zoom and quickly. Jenna made a point to get to know my daughters interests and her learning style. My daughter looked forward to the math tutoring sessions which I was very surprised by!

Jenna is a wonderful and skilled teacher. She takes the time to understand her students and tailors her sessions to their specific needs. In a few months, she helped build a lot of foundational reading and writing skills that my son did not have, and more importantly, made the sessions fun for him. She cares about the whole child, bringing elements of mindfulness, emotional development and social awareness into the work she did with my son. She has been a huge support in our journey and my son loved working with her!

We were first introduced to Ms. Collisson as our son's 1st grade teacher at a public school in District 2 in Manhattan. From our initial meeting during Parents Night, we were instantly impressed. Our son would run out the door to get to school in the morning and Ms. Collisson was a huge part of his eagerness to start the day! She has a calm and nurturing way about her yet pushes the kids to become their individual bests. As Covid struck mid-year, we had the gift of watching Ms. Collisson in action, corralling 24 1st graders on a remote screen daily, and never missing a beat. She brought engaging and interactive lessons to life with her smile and really made learning fun. She has since tutored both of our kids remotely and has fostered a true love of learning in both. We feel extremely lucky to have landed in Ms. Collisson's class, she is a true gem!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Contact me for pricing - I provide discounts on my hourly rate when you book three or more sessions per week. I also provide a lower hourly rate per child for group sessions.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I first like to set up a free initial consultation meeting with the family to discuss goals together and ensure that I'd be a good match for the child and family. Then I start with some initial assessments in order to plan next steps towards growth and success.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Childhood and Special Education (grades 1-6) from SUNY Geneseo and a Master’s degree in Literacy (birth-6th grade) from Teachers College at Columbia. I am also trained in Orton-Gillingham. I have 9 years of experience teaching in public schools.
