Introduction: I work exclusively with new writers. We have a unique mission statement with Beginnings, something that no other editor or journal has done before: we only publish the novice writer. The new writer is not competing for space in a magazine with other seasoned writers. Their work still needs to be professional, but they are competing for the editor's attention on a level playing field. How can a new writer get published if their work is constantly in the "slush pile"? It's in the slush pile because they've never been published before. They've never been published before because their work is always buried in the "slush pile"! Talk about your classic Catch-22!
