A true pro and gentleman ! Calvin clearly loves and cares about pianos. Aside from the long overdue tuning, Calvin made a few adjustments that made my piano play and feel like it did when I first got it. I would highly recommend him.

Calvin brought our baby grand back from the dead. It hadn’t been tuned in years and was clearly showing it: a sticking key, aging parts, and felt swelling from temperature changes. Most people would’ve done the bare minimum and called it “good enough.” Calvin didn’t. He went above and beyond, staying on the job until the piano was fully revived. He took it apart piece by piece to clean and restore what needed attention, then got it back in tune and playing beautifully. It honestly feels like it could hold its own in Carnegie Hall (yes, I’m exaggerating, but only a little). On top of the craftsmanship, he was on time, professional, and walked us through a few simple tips to keep the piano in great shape going forward. If you want someone who actually cares about doing the job right, hire Calvin.

Calvin was the first to respond to my inquiry. It was my first time using Thumbtack. He got back to me very quickly and fit my schedule for the following day. I looked at his credentials carefully, he is well qualified. He was punctual and set right to work, and for over three hours he sat, tuned, without a break, without fatigue, without complaint. I have to say I am impressed at that level of focus and endurance. It takes a special mind and a gifted ear to tune an instrument and not suffer from fatigue. He explained to me after inspecting the piano that it needed a pitch correction. This needs to be done in two passes, carefully, to avoid breaking strings and because tuning one end shifts the tension on the others. The pitch correction doubles the cost of the procedure. Thinking about it, this is the cost of not having a piano tuned for more than a decade. One reviewer mentioned detuning of the upper octave after the job and dissatisfaction at not getting a free follow-up tuning. After long neglect and a pitch correction, the bridge needs to settle, and drift in the upper octave is a natural part of the corrective process. The piano needs another tuning in six months, after it has stabilized. You have a sensitive instrument manufactured with natural materials, which is why it sounds spectacular when properly maintained. In my case this was my mother's Spinet and I was pleased by how good it sounded when Calvin was done. It had not been tuned as long as I can remember. I hope those who have a long-neglected piano can understand what miracles can be done with this level of care and effort. I imagine someone like Calvin, with the patience of Job at his task and in dealing with clients, deserves a strong note of thanks.

Knowledgeable and professional. A rare experience! He restored and tuned a family piano that had not been played over seventeen years and not been tuned for for forty years.
