Hired on Thumbtack

I don’t believe they deserve a 1 star review but I don’t believe they deserve a 5 star either. I was debating writing this but realized how much I truly rely on reviews when I am searching for someone to hire. He was very nice, but his profile says $50 an hour and despite his lack of reviews on here, I gave him a shot for the price. My job was fairly simple, picture hanging and he did tighten legs on my table which I really appreciated and wasn’t initially part of the job. He was supposed to be here at 4:30 he did call me saying it would be closer to 5, so I said no problem.. he ends up getting here at 5:20. Not the end of the world but still. He was here roughly 45 minutes, I was keeping track and I knew I’d be paying atleast 50, I didn’t expect him to pro-rate an hour. I fully wanted to compensate him for his time. But then he tells me after he’s already here that for “small jobs like this he doesn’t charge by the hour.” Ok, no problem. But when I went to Venmo him, he asked if $200 was to much I kind of almost died at that question. I had 3 guy friends scream at me last night and today asking why I didn’t just ask them to hang things up lol but I wanted it done by a certain time and sometimes it’s easier to just hire out, then you really feel like it will be done correctly. I kind of felt taken advantage of and we compromised on $100 which was still more than two other pros on here were going to charge me, but the job was done and it was decent so I just did it. It just sounded like he wanted to see how much he could get out of me and it just didn’t sit right with me last night or today. Again he was nice & is good at what he does, but I did learn a valuable lesson.

Details: Less than 2 hours (Simple tasks) • Bathroom • Living room • Bedroom • Wall hangings • Home

Step By Step Handyman Services's reply
I’m sorry, but I have to respectfully disagree with your account of what happened. I remember the job very clearly. I hung approximately six large picture frames, repaired your table, and helped move several items around your home to accommodate you while you were pregnant. The original price of $200 was reasonable considering the amount of work that was requested and completed. Professional picture hanging alone can be costly, especially when multiple large frames are involved. Despite that, I ultimately agreed to accept $100 because I was trying to be understanding of your circumstances. I take my work seriously, and this is how I support my family. I fully respect your right to leave a review, but I ask that any review accurately reflect the services I provided and the circumstances of the job. I will also take responsibility where it is warranted: I was late, and I acknowledge that. However, I do not believe the other statements accurately represent the work I performed or what occurred that day. I believe reviews should be fair and factual, and I simply ask that the same consideration be given to me and my work.
