As Production Manager of a College Theater Department, my duties include hiring a Graphic Designer to create posters, flyers, and programs for each of our shows. For several years, Richard Mantel worked full-time for New York magazines Special Sections department as my freelance Graphic Designer and Art Director. In that time Richard superbly produced some of publishings most stylish and striking layouts across all categories of businessfrom cultural, home design, and health/fitness to travel and consumer electronics. He brought a wonderful aesthetic and exquisite level of taste to every supplement and worked tirelessly through some of the most challenging projects. He was also responsible for commissioning and directing illustration for the supplements as well as the photo research for these high-visibility projects. His easygoing manner made him a tremendous asset to my department, and other departments at the magazine shared my enthusiasm for his work. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
As I've said, my pricing of any job depends on the nature of the job, and I quote each job individually, depending on its parameters.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
When I was a kid I started taking drawing lessons on Saturday mornings at The Cleveland Institute of Art. I always loved to draw...and when I graduated from high school I left this area to attend Pratt Institute in NYC. The rest is "history" (my own).
What types of customers have you worked with?
Logos, corporate identity programs; CD/Record cover design; book and book cover design; annual report design; poster and invitation design; etc.
