Bottom line, Mr. Napier is an old-school repair man. No frills, no overhead, no travel fee. Just a flat rate per hour for what you need fixed, he will repair it. For my repairs I needed items fixed like a leaky shower faucet and leaky toilet shutoff valve, hardwiring a dishwasher into a non-plug-in connection, and laying adhesive tiles in a bathroom. After Mr. Napier arrived and assessed the specific materials needed, he made a list for me of the necessary parts and materials, so he proceeded to work on some of the fixes while I went to Lowe's. As he worked, he even explained how certain parts become non-functioning over time and what to watch out for to save yourself some money in replacing them. If you are not a handy kind of person at all and don’t know much about various home improvement materials and parts, it would be best that Mr. Napier first go with you to the home improvement store together and purchase the necessary materials so all of your repairs can be worked on straight through. I would hire Mr. Napier again.

My 26-year-old furnace wasn't putting out any warm air, so I contacted Jonathan with Jonny on the Spot to troubleshoot the issue. He was able to schedule a consultation for the same evening. Jonathan quickly found the cause of the problem and warned us that continued use of the furnace would generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in our basement, which he had measured during his inspection. Since excessive rusting and possible cracking of the heat exchanger was serious enough to warrant replacement of the furnace unit, Jonathan agreed to come back the next day and perform the work. Had he not been able to schedule the consultation and unit replacement so quickly, my family and I would've been without heat for days during a week of frigid, below zero weather. The quality of Jonathan's work was top notch, and he gave us a great deal on a brand new Bryant unit. He even found an unknown issue with our A/C system and recommended we address it soon to ensure we can still see cool our home this summer. Jonathan's professionalism and courteousness are impressive and top off the technical skills that make him a fine craftsman. I would definitely recommend Jonny on the Spot for any heating needs. Thanks, Jonathan!

Anthony responded to my call and maintained good communications - text me when he was on his way - identified the problem - made the repair and was gone. Tony was prompt, professional and personable. Made no excuse that he had to pick up the part...he came prepared. I will call him if I need additional assitance in the future - give him a call and see for yourself.

I was upgrading my house to a smart home so I installed a smart thermostat. After completion I noticed my AC was not working after playing with it for a few hours I finally gave up and the next morning got on thumbtack and requested service. Not only did keystone have the cheapest prices they were also the best at replying. In the end all that had happened was I knocked a wire out of a wire nut when I was install the new wire. It did take the repair man about 40 mins to figure out it was just a wire although 20 of those mins were because my new thermostat has a 5 min delay to power on overtime we had to shut it off for safety reason. All in all I would say Keystone is a good company and they will be in a busy for many years to come. They were honest with pricing and don't up charge, they had the lowest call fee and the technician knew his job! I would hire them again if i needed a HVAC repair.

John called ahead as planned and arrived early, which was fine. He was very thorough and explained what he was doing as he went along (AC maintenance). I mentioned that sometimes the house seemed humid and my humidistat was reading in the 60% range. He investigated and changed the furnace blower speed and removed a little freon. It brought the temperature down and also the humidity. He offered to come back next week (no charge) if need be. I will be calling him again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

      • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
      • The temperature cannot be regulated.
      • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
      • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
      • The thermostat isn’t working.
      • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

      • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
        • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
      • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
      • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
      • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
