I fell victim to emotional manipulation from this contractor and am embarrassed to share my naivety, but I'd feel really bad if someone had this experience and didn't have the information available to make their own decision. I am diy finishing my basement, but I wanted to hire out for drywall and wood window jams (since they kinda go together). I received 3 estimates - $3800, $4000, and $5000 (NBG Finishing and Carpentry). I hired the most expensive one due to the fact that priming was included and I liked talking with him. It’s around 32 sheets of drywall for the project. They all estimated around 4-6 days to complete the job (1-2 to hang, 2-4 to finish) - it’s only a 500 square foot basement with only a small 6x9 ceiling section, and 1 of the concrete walls is left without drywall. I paid $3600 deposit in December with an agreed start date January 20th. He started a week late January 27th, no big deal. From day 1 he asked for some money, he said his last job set him back and asked for $400 ahead of time (I did it 🤦‍♂️) The next day (January 28) he asked for another $500 draw, again I emphasized with his situation and liked talking to him and misjudged his genuineness. (I did it again), he said he’d take $100 off the total price for the inconvenience. (he didn’t) 2/7 he asked for $200 more, he took 10 days off (didn’t work for 10 days) then sent a chatgpt message saying he underbid the job and asked for more money on 2/17. On that day I foolishly paid the remainder of the balance before the work was completed. Then the drywall portion of the job was completed 2/18 finally. However, the windows remained. He said he lost his measurements and asked if I could measure the window openings - I did and sent them. Then he no call no showed twice (I paid him too early, which I suspect took away his motivation). He no called no showed two times and didn’t arrive for 2 more weeks. Finally on march 5th he came for the windows. He texted in the morning asking for $300 more and I said no of course (like, I already overpaid him at this point). He nailed one horribly built and wrongly sized window jam in and left the rest on my basement floor and left without saying a word to me. Texted me later that it’s my fault they don’t fit and he’s not eating the cost of rebuilding them. He seems like a genuine guy when you talk to him. With some past personal struggles as we all have in life, but I came to realize after our final exchange that I was just a victim to what I’d call emotional manipulation. He changed once he received his money. My final interaction with him was very negative, not only did he not apologize he said it’s my fault and he’s not eating the cost of new material. I suggested small claims case, and he transitioned from hostile (I will counter sue you for so much money and definitely win), to emotional pleas for pity (I don’t care what your issues are dude, finish the job you agreed to) After an unhinged conversation he eventually said he can try to gather materials and come back in a week to do them. (Yea another week…he started in January), I didn't feel comfortable with him on my property after his unhinged behavior at the end. It wasted a lot of my time and a lot of my money on this experience. If I had one good thing to say, it’d be that the finished drywall portion is overall good. It took way too long and I needed to do a few touch ups in some spots (but I expect that with new drywall generally). There's some bubbles from where the mud wasn't mixed enough, etc. I’ve had bad and good experiences with contractors in the past but this one takes the cake for the worst and weirdest, why abandon the job and burn the bridge when it’s so close to completion? I ended up cutting wood and finishing them myself and they look great, but of course it was an extra time and money sink - I'm sure a skilled carpenter could have done it in a couple hours
