In law school, I had a concentration in business law. I finished first in my class in business law/taxation. I started at a firm, primarily doing business law for one client who owned a great deal of property. It primarily included contracts (such as leases, mortgages, and sales agreements) review, drafting and litigation. I quit the firm after three years, when my job morphed into something I did not go to law school for--the firm had me begin to do its collections, which there were very few. I did not go to law school nor take that job to collect debts. After some disagreements, I quit. After I traveled a bit, I volunteered at hospice and became very familiar and comfortable with estate planning (beyond the simple services) and legal aide. Some time later, a former client hired me directly. I now primarily work as in-house counsel and have done so for the past three years. I then worked full-time, so serious litigation is difficult, but I try to do affordable (as I realized once, I could not afford myself at my old firm based on my billable hours) work or often free with my side LLC. It's free if it's extremely simple. As I have extra time and have come to learn areas of the law, from suing banks on my own for hundreds of millions of dollars to fighting the EPA in a gigantic wetlands suit and defending minor traffic violations for friends of my employer, I have grown well beyond simply doing contracts. I took a lot of pride, and it made all the difference in the past when I worked on the side. I fought for a client who could not afford a retainer, whose sister had forced his mother to write him out of her will despite his being completely disabled. We were very lucky to settle for a decent amount. Since then, I have gained his appreciation as no one would take the case after he said he could not afford a retainer. I am very open to discussing, and at least hoping I can provide some sort of assistance, as well as taking unconventional clients. There is an issue that I am not extremely available for litigation (complex); it depends, perhaps one or two clients, but I do full-time work as it is. I'd like to think that if I cannot partially assist with practical advice before "working", I can find or help find an attorney who would be interested in assisting clients.
