We are nearly completed with our project and our expectations have thus far all been exceeded. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated professional who is so talented. Cristal's skills are superb. It is clear every day that she is 100% committed to excellence. We are in regular contact with Cristal and we know the status of our project at all times. We really like the regular communication about a project so important to us. Cristal asks poignant questions along the way to guide her work. Her attention to detail is impeccable. Cristal is a pleasure to work with and we are so excited for the final product.Jan 11, 2018VerifiedCristal B.'s reply
Thank you Diane & Courtney! You both have been great to work with- happy you love the work and hope to work with you again!
Flying Frog Studio created illustrations for a book I wrote for my kids. Cristal easily translated my vision into something tangible for this project and I hope to work with her again.Dec 4, 2017VerifiedCristal B.'s reply
Thank you Antoinette! I'm glad you enjoyed the work- looking forward to our next project!
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? My prices are based on complexity of your piece, what medium you want it finished in and the size of the final piece. If you can give those specifics I can give you a fairly accurate estimate on what I can do the piece for. For children's book illustration, I charge a flat per-page rate.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I like to review your thoughts on your project- what are you aiming for? For example, if a children's book, what is your age range? Do you have a particular style you prefer? I am a traditional fine pencil and watercolor artist: I have a playful, somewhat whimsical style. For a book the process: first step is reading through the script! I can assist with page breaks, but always happy to see your ideas as well! After that, we work on character design: this part takes this longest! However, once we figure out the characters, it's smooth sailing. After you approve character design, I sketch quick page layout drafts: this is for illustration placement on the page. After you approve those, I do final watercolor paintings for you! Regardless of project type, I work with you EACH step!
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts with emphasis on drawing from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. I also participate in art festivals to get an idea of what new work is being produced by fellow artists. Recently started my membership with the Color Pencil Society of America (aka- CPSA) as well as the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
