Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: That it is not a job, its a way of life, it is our lifestyle. The fact that we get to work on becoming better people everyday so that we can be better for both our horses and students is a great benefit of what we do for a living. We are constantly learning, constantly working to be better and will for as long as we are blessed enough to do this, I can't imagine something more rewarding.

I have had the pleasure of training with, and now the friendship of Nick and Jessie for almost a year now. I came to them after many years out of the saddle, wanting to put my feet firmly in the strips in the Natural / Vaquero / Tom and Bill Dorrance / Ray Hunt and Buck Brannaman style of horsemanship. I had heard Donohue Horsemanship was the place I would find this. I cannot say they met expectations because they have gone so far and beyond what I had imagined. I leased "Sunday" for a time and then, bought my colt, Lincoln. Nicks skill and support have resulted in an extraordinary start for Lincoln and the education and support I receive in my lessons with Nick and with Jessie often make me wish for a longer drive home so as to hold on to the feelings and message in quiet contemplation. Lincoln and I are able to participate in Clinics that Nick and Jessie host as well as clinics they produce and facilitate. The opportunity to learn and grow with ones horse is endless. The care they put into their horsemanship is reflected in the care of the facility and its other four legged family members. The cats, their dogs and the cattle they raise are all as respected and well cared for as the horses. If someone had told me a year ago I'd be sorting cattle and experiencing the kind of horsemanship I have been, I'd have said, "In my dreams." Well........don't wake me ~ ever. • • •

If you're looking to build a partnership with your horse, Nick can help you on that journey. The vaquero style of horsemanship is the best way to create a willing partnership instead of using fear, force or thinking you can "control" your horse with gadgets. Nick is an active student of Ricky Quinn and Buck Brannaman who learned from horsemen Ray Hunt and the Dorrance brothers. I've learned so much from Nick and Buck since starting my horsemanship journey back in 2010. From the easiest lesson horse to one who requires a lot of support from the human, Nick has helped me through it all and I learn something new every single lesson. Come ready to learn and you will see changes in you and your horse that you never thought possible.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

We ride at least twice a year with our Mentor Buck Brannaman and 3 to 4 times a year with a protégé of his Ricky Quinn Jr.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I didn't decide to do this for a living, it just kind of happened. I worked as project manager for a large commercial electrical construction company and Jessie was a student at ASU. I was apprenticing in Arizona under Dan Knuth, as he was preparing to sell his ranch, he was grooming me to take over his training and lesson business (I was unaware of this at the time). He sold the ranch to some folks who were new to horses and offered me his existing client list and training horses. At first I started out part-time and Jessie helped too. As she graduated from ASU things started to pick up a bit with the horses and we decided to make the leap to riding full-time. A few months later we decided to move to Oregon and build a lesson a training program here. We have been here now since 2006 and have realized our dream of owning our facility Silver Spade Ranch in Banks in 2011.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Do your research, there are a lot of folks out there giving lessons, make sure they are qualified and can back up what they teach. A big red flag for me is someone who gives lessons, but does not ride during them. We are horseback all day, weather working outside horses, starting colts or riding our own personal horses so when we teach we are also riding. This allows us to demonstrate what we are asking folks to and also puts out there where you can watch and say, you know I want my horses to operate like that, or, hey its not for me.
