Math is the most popular Thumbtack tutoring category. Math tutoring requests include arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics and more. People of all ages seek math tutors, from under 6 to over 65 years old, and their most common goals are to improve grades, prepare for tests, or learn new topics and techniques.

Subject complexity

A math tutor’s rates may increase with the complexity of the subject matter they teach. Introductory-level math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can require less training to teach and therefore may cost less per hour than subjects such as advanced calculus or abstract algebra.

Tutor education and experience

Costs can be higher for math tutors who have more experience or a higher educational level. The types of math they have studied, the academic institutions they’ve attended and the number of years they’ve been teaching and tutoring can all affect their rates.

Time spent driving to the student’s location often results in higher overall tutoring costs. However, some tutors may include the cost of gas in their hourly rate. Students can save money by attending sessions at the tutor’s location.

Session length

The longer the tutoring session, the higher the fee. Typically tutors charge by the hour and fractions thereof. Missed sessions can result in cancellation fees, so be sure to understand your tutor’s policy.

Session type

Tutors offer a variety of session options, including one-on-one, in-person tutoring; small classes catering to two or more students; and online real-time tutoring, taught remotely via camera.

Tutoring packages can reduce the cost per session. The frequency of sessions can also affect the cost per session, with the potential for weekly sessions to cost less than monthly sessions.

Very knowledgeable and true mathmagician! My son (11yo) has grown leaps and bounds in just two weeks. Her price per hour is extremely worth it.

Jeremy Fine, Educational Consultant

Jeremy is very knowledgable, professional education coach who has mastered his field of child tutoring. Aside from being a fine math tutor, he is also helping our child with organization skills. Even though he is new to us, I can say that he is dedicated and dependable. There are no screaming matches in the house regarding her math work and she has started enjoying math which is a big plus. I would highly recommend Jeremy without any reservations. Regarding his fees; you may find a range of tuition fees on thumbtack but essentially you get what you pay for. Having a professional business myself I can tell you that he is certainly worth your child's education and self esteem Dr. K

Meg's Math & Science Tutoring

My son is a senior at HRA and needed help with his SAT prep, since his score from May testing was not enough to apply in the college of his top choices. I reached out back in June of 2015 and ended up hiring Megan as a tutor after a long conversation with her and felt very confident about my choice even though there weren't much of review about her. Megan was very attentive and flexible with my very busy senior's schedule ( plays foot ball and hockey) I was pleased with her assessment of his skills before she began. She has helped out so much and now that we have the result of his improved recent SAT score, he is putting in the early decision application to one of his choice school. is improved enough to apply at school of his choice. I believe that Megan truly loves math and teaching others to love and improve on this subject and enjoys what she does. Charges for the lessons are very reasonable and to be frank, I would pay a lot more for all the extra work she has done for my son. I wish she could've been my son's tutor during his entire high school. Not only Megan is highly recommended by both my husband and I, my son is happy with the help she has given him. I wish I could give her 10 stars but unfortunately, 5 is max.
