Matched our son with the perfect teacher. An outstanding technique is of the utmost importance as well as promoting good musicality and my son is receiving that and more. Very affordable which makes weekly lessons doable; he will advance quickly. So grateful for Thumbtack making this happen. I really didn't know where to start looking for a teacher until I stumbled onto this website.

My 6-year-old son has been learning piano with Mr. Paul for almost a year. He is THE BEST teacher! He is very patient to kids. He is well prepared every time, and encourages my son a lot. My son really loves the songs Mr. Paul picked for him. I saw so much improvement in my son during this year. Mr. Paul is careful, he corrected every little mistake and the wrong gestures. So one day Mr. Paul gave some homework to my son. And Mr Paul said: 'I probably gave too much to you.' And my son replied: 'No, you are giving me a great skill!' I was so surprised that this came from a 6-year-old kid. The price is so AFFORDABLE. Mr. Paul helps to re-arrange the class if we can not make it. And he sometimes makes it a little longer than scheduled if necessary, rather than hurries to the end. Anyway, I rarely make a review. And for such an excellent piano teacher Mr. Paul, the best thing I can think about is to let more people know him. Kids not only learn skills here, but also concentration, perseverance and sense of beauty from piano, which I believe will benefit the rest of their lives.

Paul is the best! He takes time to get to know his students and what they are trying to accomplish in their quest to learn the piano. He has the ability to play any style and therefore can transfer that knowledge to his students. He is good at gauging where someone is at in their skill level and suggesting certain pieces or styles that will help them with their progression.

My experience with this teacher was horrible. Paul has no patience for a child that might not pay attention as much as necessary. He has forgotten what it is to be a child or how to win over a child and make a lesson fun. My child had one previous lesson with Paul. It is true that she was not following his directions and his frustration was quite obvious. On my second visit I was appalled by Paul’s behavior. Again my child wouldn’t sit down on the bench correctly. Verbatim this what occurred next, I quote: “This is not going to work out. Get out of my house NOW, NOW!(Screaming, like I was going to prolong this). I have better things to do than waste my time with your daughter. I don’t want to take your money. It is true that my daughter can be difficult when approached in an authoritarian manner. However, my daughter is not yet six and Paul brought my daughter to tears. Surely this behavior was at best inappropriate and says more about the person Paul is than about my daughter. A simple “ May I have word with you in private” would be a mature way to part company. Not throwing a 6 year out of your house because you are frustrated. I was horribly offended by his manner and attitude. No way to treat a 6 year old. This man has no patience with young kids. I would stay away from this teacher unless your child has some experience with piano. Definitely not child friendly. Normally I do not post reviews unless something extraordinary happens This is one of those: extraordinarily bad. An apology is in order if this poor excuse for a “teacher” has any understanding of the unnecessary hurt he has caused.

Details: 6 - 9 years old • No, the student cannot read music • No formal training • Classical • Yes, the student has a piano • 30 minutes • My home, venue, etc.

Janotech Piano Lessons's reply
I feel this review is completely unfair. I did not scream or yell. All I did was affirm that I cannot teach your daughter since she did not seem to want to sit at the piano and take any instruction. She did not seem to respond to my hello or greeting that day. The previous lesson she smiled and eventually agreed to accept me as her piano teacher. I know that kids can sometimes be difficult to work with. I have worked with many children, but there needs to be at least some liking and respect for the teacher and for wanting to be there to learn to play. Otherwise, what is the point. All I did was to state that maybe she would be better with another piano teacher, someone, possibly a woman might be better suited. I do not and never have intentionally lost my patience when students are trying hard to cooperate and practice and are interested. But, if the student is just continually upset and in a bad mood all the time, then there is nothing I can do, which is why I stated that I did not want to waste any more of my time or your time and money for lessons that are completely futile. Please understand that I am not a difficult person or horrible person, and I have incredible patience with children. You can speak with any of my previous students, and they will surely tell you that I put up with a lot, and still continue to give lessons and have patience with them. Again, if this is how you feel even after I have called and apologized leaving a phone message and not getting a call back, then okay, but I still think this is a little unfair. I kind of feel like I am being held hostage as a terrible person without having a chance to talk about the situation.
