I thought long and hard about what to say in this review, and after deep thought I want to give an honest account of my experience. My mom passed away two years ago, my stepdad can no longer live on his own, and I had to clear out their home in Dalmatia. The house hadn’t been cared for in about four years and had sat vacant for months. I live seven hours away and had only two days to get everything done: Sunday for the clean-out and Monday for the cleaners and other contractors. I hired Alex through Thumbtack and explained all of this upfront. We agreed to $90/hour for two people. I told him I already had a dumpster, and he said we could use his truck if needed. My position was clear: if we used his truck, I would only pay the equivalent of one dumpster, not more. I wasn’t refusing to pay—I just didn’t want to be overcharged. He kept insisting I’d owe more for the dumpster I already had, but I later confirmed I didn’t owe anything extra. It felt like he wanted me to pay more to use his truck than a real dumpster would cost, which makes no sense. Day one started fine, but after a little over three hours he said they were “too tired” and left—though plenty was left to do. He also cut apart a box spring and chair he said wouldn’t fit, even though both had gone upstairs whole and nothing in the house had changed. Leaving early caused a ripple effect: my pressure washer had to drive back from Harrisburg another day, and I paid for an extra U-Haul day. Day two they arrived late, and his attitude was completely different. In the basement he began yelling—about money, about how $90/hour wasn’t enough, about the house being disgusting, and about me not appreciating his work. I told him more than three times not to yell. He threw it in my face that the job was on a Sunday (which he had agreed to), said I should be paying for his gas and drive time (which we never discussed), and even insinuated I didn’t have money. My daughter overheard and came downstairs to check on me. It was an already emotional situation, and being yelled at in my mom’s house made it worse. He later calmed down, apologized multiple times, and finished the job. He even sent me a text apologizing again afterward. Still, I paid him in full—six hours of labor, $375 for a truckload, plus about $185 for gas—$1,100 total for less than six hours of work. It should have been about $915, but I paid more because he said I wasn’t fairly compensating him, even though we had a clear agreement. If you underbid a job, that’s on you—not the customer. None of the other contractors I hired that weekend (all driving an hour or more) asked for gas money, demanded extra, or yelled at me. Now—was it hard work? Yes. Did I appreciate the effort? Yes. Was the house dirty? Yes. But this is the business he’s in. The job could have been completed in a single day without the drama. Yelling at a customer, changing terms after the fact, and pressuring for more money is unprofessional. I intended to give five stars for the effort, but after the way I was treated, I cannot. Side note: The guy working with him was great—polite and hardworking.

Regarding pricing—our agreement was for $90/hour for two workers, and we discussed that truckloads and disposal would be billed separately. I never want there to be confusion about costs, and I appreciate you paying promptly in full. I’ve since adjusted how I explain pricing and fuel charges to prevent any future misunderstanding.
