FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Yes! Although continuing education it isn't required in my field, I consider myself a life long student because I love to learn. In the spring of 2015, I will complete an associates in Landscape Design. I am also enrolled in a Sustainable Landscape Design certificate program through Phipps Conservatory. I will most likely continue to take classes throughout my career.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Psychology, I spent 10 years working a desk job. I love to spend time outside, and it's hard for me to sit still for very long, so working in offices was really miserable! One summer, I took on extra work at a local greenhouse, and I loved it. I overheard two customers discussing Penn State's Master Gardener Program, and it sounded really interesting so I applied and was accepted. After finishing my training through Penn State, I realized I wanted to turn my hobby into a career, so I began taking college level horticulture classes. From there, I realized that landscape design really suited me, because it allows me to be creative, interact with clients, and, most importantly, spend time outdoors!
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A client hired me to improve the curb appeal of his home. Initially, the job involved weeding and pruning, but as I got to know the client and his wife, I recommended mulching and planting flowers. The transformation was amazing, and I felt like they really appreciated my help.
