Introduction
I practice intellectual property law through a solo practice, dedicated to providing patent and trademark services for medical device, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology disciplines. I consult on trademark matters associated with corporate transactional or product branding. Clients range from the large entities such as a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company, major US and foreign universities, to the smaller entities such as start-up biotechnology companies, entrepreneurs, and individual scientists looking to develop new technology. While I enjoy working with the large well-established entities, the interaction with new start-ups and the development of new, uncharted technology is most appealing. I serve on a not-for-profit organization, where I have a first-hand view of the hurdles presented to biotechnology researchers who are looking to exploit their new discoveries and exposure to a wide variety of new technologies that are based on these same discoveries in the medical field. I also have adjunct appointments at major medical schools in the area and research institutes, where I work with individuals in developing their new technology. My role is to be a chaperone in the development process by assisting in the legal needs and contributing to future business development. I bring legal expertise to academic and research scientists who may have never worked with a lawyer, or had exposure to the legal demands of a start-up business and the requirements for developing a sound patent portfolio.
