FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge by the hour. Please contact me for a quote! When offering in-person lessons, I can travel to your home (subject to added travel fee at my discretion).
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We start with an initial exchange of messages via Thumbtack to identify goals. I can do a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation on request. Then, we set up a time for our initial lesson, and I provide a list of supplies for you to purchase in advance! An initial 3-hour lesson is recommended if you are an absolute beginner. This session is used to learn to thread and use your sewing machine, to learn about the essential tools of the trade, and to learn a few indispensable beginner sewing techniques. Time permitting, we can even get started on a simple sewing project to apply these skills. Additional sessions are recommended to work on simple beginner sewing projects, and ultimately, to learn to work with a sewing pattern! Additional sessions of varying lengths (depending on your goals and the project we decide to work on) can be scheduled focused on learning key skills such as: inserting a zipper; making buttonholes and placing/sewing on buttons; sewing darts; making a collared shirt or shirt dress; making a round neckline with facing; making a v-neck with facing and raising a v-neck; inserting a sleeve; sewing pleats; and making a fully lined dress bodice. I am also available generally to help coach you through just about any beginner to intermediate level sewing pattern you might be interested in making.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am entirely self-taught. My training comes from online tutorials, browsing sewing books, and sewing my way through scores of sewing patterns in the last three years. I easily have racked up hundreds of hours of sewing experience in the last three years.
