- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Math and science depends a lot on practicing problems. We work through homework or textbook problems. When the student breezes through a problem, I know what he knows. When he gets stuck on a problem, then we have identified subject matter that we need to review. I start at the beginning and explain. My most important job is to watch and listen to know what the student understands and where there are holes in the material that we need to correct.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BS and MS in chemical engineering from Rensselaer and Carnegie-Mellon. I spent 40 years as an engineer in a chemical plant. I have a lot of experience with practical and academic math and chemistry and more importantly, I have experience in the people skills of communicating and listening.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
In college I found that the best way to learn is to teach. I excelled in classes when I studied with others and spent time teaching classmates what I had learned. I spent time teaching underclassmen through college. When I was working, I helped a niece and a co-worker's daughter with algebra. I developed a passion for teaching. I took some teaching classes and eventually started a business of tutoring after work. Now that I am retired, I have more time for tutoring. Tutoring is my business, my hobby, and my passion.
