Introduction: "Singing tone" is not a figure of speech to me - I am a concert baritone as well as a string player. I truly love the teamwork and close interplay of chamber music - performing or coaching or both. Even the simplest songs can have character, beautiful sound, and clear phrasing. These qualities make music an art and a pleasure, instead of a chore. Suzuki Method may have standardized the music children play, but every student has personality and moods galore. So it never feels as though I'm teaching the same lesson twice. I have the highest pedigree as to traditional violin; 3 years with Itzhak Perlman's master teacher Dorothy DeLay. My Suzuki credentials include 2 years' study at School For Strings with founder Louise Behrend and 20 years' teaching experience, including at the Brooklyn and Queens CUNY campuses. I hold three degrees in my field, and have been licensed to teach music in New Jersey and New York.

My Hyman was a violin teacher for both my son and my daughter. He taught them over 10 years combined. The length of the time will certainly tell a story as to how much I liked him as a teacher. He was always on time for the lessons and was reachable and flexible in changing lessons. He is a highly accomplished violinist who truly appreciates music. He taught my kids not only the technical aspect of playing violin, but also the ability to enjoy and appreciate music in general. My kids would not have been as good violists if it werent Mr. Hyman. As I like him very much as a teacher I always recommend him to friends and families.

Dan is a great teacher. He has decades of experience. He is great at motivating kids through challenging stages of learning. Dan worked very, very well with our son with Asperger's, whose behavior could be difficult. Dan found ways of relating to his interests and dealing with his sometimes quirky behavior. We highly recommend Daniel Hyman.

Pricing is individually negotiable based on the student's experience and family's situation.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I gently and patiently get to know new students as musicians, learners, and people. For students with any some playing experience, I like to begin by hearing a minute or two of anything they enjoy playing. I remark on what was distinctive and pleasant, adding a suggestion or two to encourage focus on getting to the next level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I take part in spring auditions, their preparation and adjudication. I sing in a truly challenging collegiate a cappella vocal ensemble which covers 500 years of musical styles. I study and perform in the summer chamber music conference at Bennington College, I listen to concerts, recordings, and streaming audio/video, and I read and study about music teaching. There is no end to it.
