What do you enjoy about the work you do?

Construction of homes and businesses, both commercial and industrial, is a big job. Most people don’t build their own structures because it requires specialized knowledge in a variety of diverse, though interrelated, fields. What they do is bring in professionals. Those already in possession of homes and business buildings also need the same professionals for installation and, more commonly, for repair and replacement. The training these pros receive enables them to analyze, evaluate, and correct both common and uncommon problems. Three of the more well-known trade professionals are the plumber, the electrician, and the HVAC technician. Each plays a vital role in not only installing the machines and appliances used every day, but the electricity that powers them. Each of these three areas overlap in some ways and the professionals who practice their specific area of expertise are familiar with what the other technicians do. This may be due to the similarities in their training and education.

Repaired plumbing better than expected- although the cabinet repairs left a lot to be desired and will still need fixed

Wendell was affordable, showed up when he said he would and got the job done. Nothing over the top, just a good handyman. The only negative feedback, while still affordable, was that he did not take credit card and was a bit non-transparent about cost of materials.

    Will not use again
Had a leak through the ceiling. He open the ceiling and fixed replaced the drain. He replied immediately and came right away since it was an urgent matter. He has to come back to repair the ceiling after everything is dried out. Had planned to use him again. This is a rental and I live out of town and he communicated with me every step of the way, until he got paid. I was going out of the country for a week and so I paid him BEFORE he came back to repair the ceiling. Big mistake! This is something I don't usually do, but because he was so prompt I didn't want to make him wait until I got back. The day he said he would come back he was a no show. The next day he was 2 hours late. He did not repair the ceiling, which I asked him if he could do before I hired him, since I had another plummer who said they would repair the ceiling. He just stuck a piece of sheet rock in the hole in the ceiling and left. When I asked him about this he said, "People like you are cheap and want something for nothing. Any other plummer would have been alot more (money) and not fixed the ceiling. I am not going to spend any more time with it, so calling me is a waste of time." I paid him Exactly the amount he quoted me. If there was an additional cost he could have said so and I would have paid it. I SPOKE TO HIM AFTER HE FINISHED THE PLUMBING PART AND HE NEVER SAID HE NEEDED MORE MONEY, BUT HE HAD NOT BEEN PAID YET. After he was paid all of a sudden it was not enough. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND RUDE.

Problem Resolved But unrelated circuits were left turned OFF and Freezer was inadvertenty left OFF!
4/19 - The gentleman from WH Electrical & Plumbing and Contracting service was very prompt. Arrived as planned and he corrected the issue . Update 4/21 - I have to change my rating from from 5 start to 3 stars. The day that the electrician was here, I had a cold sandwich supper and had no occasion to use any kitchen appliance. The following day I was off running errands. So it was not till a good 24 hours after the service call that I went to use a small kitchen appliance and discovered that there was no power to several kitchen outlets. I checked the circuit breaker box and saw that the breaker switch was set OFF for both the kitchen outlets and to our large freezer in the basement. Seems these circuits were turned OFF and never turned back on. The service call was for an electric line to the clothes dryer so the kitchen and freezer lines are totally unrelated. Not sure why they were shut off or why they were left off. I restored the power to these lines by flipping the circuit breaker back ON and no trouble since. However, my complaint is that the freezer was off for over 24 hours and I could have lost hundreds of dollars in food. Lucky I caught it when I did!

i checked all breakers after cover was installed and all were on ,something could make them triped .power surge from the freezer cant say ,but it happens alot.

The job is about 90% complete; we are still waiting for a part; Wendell replaced worn out 8 faucets in two bathrooms; the work was professionally done and reasonably priced; I paid separately for the parts and he charged me for the time to find and install them; he even told me what did not need to be replaced; I plan to use Wendell for all future needs. He is honest and does a great job.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
All pricing is composed of Parts, Time and Labor. A written estimate is given for all jobs. A written contract is drawn up, upon agreement and signed by both parties. Any additional or minuses of work we shall do an addendum to the written contract to protect both parties. If it is decided more work needs to be done; a change order will be completed, prices and times for completion to adjust the contract.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
try to explain to customer what needs done and how i am going to do it .
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In the Army School of Hard Knocks Technical School for Electrician 30 years in maintenance field.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Me personally, I started when I was a teen fixing what had to be done. I could not call anyone, so little by little I learned some here and there. I always had a fascination for how things worked so I went to Electrical school and got into Industrial Electrical maintenance and picked up other trades like plumbing, basic remodeling, and lock smithing.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Water heater installation, Electric breaker panels, sub panels, ceiling fans, outlets, switches, GFI outlets, New electric service installation, indoor/ outdoor lighting, security and alarm systems, plumbing, frozen pipe repair, install dishwashers, garbage disposals and things most people need done right away.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Trouble shoot an electrical problem for a man that lived out of state. He called, his mom was having issues with power surges. Went over and checked it all out. Took a couple hours Turns out, everything in the home was ok. Appeared it was Duquesne Lights issue outside. Homeowner called the Light company they came out. Turns out the neighbors tree was stealing the power...... Causing it to arc .... The woman's son sent us a letter thanking us for coming over and explained the tree was the cause of all the power issues.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
My favorite sayings and words to live by are "Take your time and do it right the first time. & Work smarter not harder." And with that being said. You the customer need to take your time and Plan what you want and not be in a hurry to get it done by picking the wrong contractor, because of the lowest price. Remember, You get what you pay for. Cheap is not best. You need to shop value for your dollar. Do your research look for a contractor that would do a professional job for a fair price the right way.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
1. How long have you been working in this industry? Answer You WANT to Hear: Long enough to accumulate at least ten to twenty references you can contact. Why You Want to Hear It: While more experience does not always mean better service, a contractor who has been around the block a time or two is more likely to have a proven track record. 2.Are you licensed? Answer You WANT to Hear: Yes. Why You Want to Hear It: This question can be as tricky as maneuvering a bulldozer through a tree-filled backyard since not all states require contractors to be licensed. And some states set a monetary value to licensing. For instance, in North Carolina any job that will run over $30,000 will require a licensed contractor. 3. Do you have insurance in case something in my home gets broken in the renovation and/or construction process? Answer You WANT to Hear: Yes. Why you Want to Hear It: While no company enters your home with the intention of breaking a main water pipe during construction and flooding the bottom floor of your two-story Victorian, accidents happen; and when they do, you don’t want to be held financially responsible for repairing damage you didn’t cause. The company entering your home should ensure if they break something, they will fix it and cover all of the costs to do so. 4. Can you provide a list of references I can contact? Answer You WANT to Hear: Yes. 5.What is the projected timeline for this project? Answer You Want to Hear: A specific amount of time. Why You Want to Hear it: While unexpected problems might arise as walls are removed or structures are built, an experienced contractor should be able to give you a projected time for completion of the project. “There are times when a project can’t be properly estimated due to the suspicion of hidden damage or additional work behind existing walls or floors.” In these cases, he adds, you should enter into a “time and materials” contract. So guess what your next question will be? 6. Are you willing to sign a “time and materials” contract? Answer You Want to Hear: Yes. Why You Want to Hear it: Imagine this renovation project nightmare: an unexpected find that results in extra time, materials and labor fees to fix; a contractor who wants to charge twice your monthly mortgage per hour to repair the damage; and you, stuck with a project half-finished and paying twice as much as you should to get it completed. This does happen, so it is imperative homeowners understand prior to the start of the project what the fees will be if a contractor runs into unexpected fixes. A “times and materials” document states the labor rate and material markup of anything that might arise unexpectedly. 7. How often do you finish a project in the anticipated time? Answer You Want to Hear: Most of the time. Why You Want to Hear It: You likely won’t get a percentage-type answer when you ask this question; but knowing how often projects get completed on time will tell you certain things about the potential contractor. One, says LaForge, is whether or not the contractor is overextended, which can delay your project. “Too often contractors take on more work than they can handle because they don’t want to alienate a customer,” he explains. But a contractor can tell you, “Most of the time!” when, in reality, the opposite is more accurate. What can you do? Ask your references if the contractor finished on time and, if not, why. 8.Will you be on site at all times to oversee progress of the job? Answer you want to hear: Yes. Why You Want to Hear It: The contractor you hire is the project manager and, therefore, should be on site each day to oversee progress and ensure the work is being done according to the plan you agreed to in the beginning of the project. If a contractor answers “No” to this question, you need to ask . . . 9. Will you write out a contract specifying what you will do, the anticipated time frame, line items for materials needed to complete the job, cost, time needed, a ‘time and materials’ contract should a project become more involved than first thought, and a termination clause? Answer You WANT to Hear: Yes. Why You Want to Hear It: A contractor (or any professional) can offer you the moon but deliver a pebble; and what can you do about it if you don’t have the agreement in writing? Not much. Request a written contract that includes the items listed above. Have the contractor sign and date the contract and keep a copy in your records. Beyond that, make sure you understand everything in the contract. Consumers have to understand and accept all of the terms of the contract so they have a clear outline of who is to do what and when – and what happens if the terms are violated.” 10. Will you offer a guarantee on your work, and, if so, what is the guarantee? Answer You WANT to Hear: Yes, with a specific amount of time (six months, one year, lifetime, etc). Why You Want to Hear It: You wouldn’t purchase a car without some type of warranty against defects; you shouldn’t hire a contractor who can’t guarantee work, either. (In fact, Patio Enclosures offers a limted lifetime warranty on all sunrooms!) Contractors can guarantee against two types of problems: •Defective Materials •Workmanship Problems Your written guarantee should include clauses that state what the contractor will cover and for how long. 11. What is the payment schedule? Answer You WANT to Hear: Depends on the company, but you should never pay the entire amount up front. Why You Want to Hear It: Different contractors may offer different options when it comes to payment and different options may work better for your situation. However, never pay for the work in its entirety prior to the job’s completion and inspection. “We advise that a fair down payment is fine, but consumers should establish a payment plan tied to progress and should hold back the final payment until the job is completed to the consumer’s satisfaction.” Since not all homeowners have the cash to pay for the project upon completion,
