Introduction: James Smedley is a partner in McCarter & English LLP's Intellectual Property, Technology and Venture Capital practice groups. His focus is primarily on strategic counseling of companies with respect to protecting and enforcing their intellectual property rights, both domestically and internationally. He has a wealth of industry experience in the computer software and hardware fields, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies. James’s practice also covers the biotechnology and life sciences fields, where he advises clients on matters such as identifying, protecting and licensing novel drug therapies. James has prosecuted hundreds of patents before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and its foreign counterparts in over 70 countries worldwide. James provides intellectual property counsel to organizations of all sizes, from startups, to small-to-medium sized enterprises to Fortune 100 companies as well as private and public universities. From securing the rights in inventions and brands, to developing substantial and lucrative patent portfolios, to handling complex intellectual property litigation and licensing matters, James’s practice covers the management of the entire intellectual property lifecycle. James is also extremely active in the venture space, representing numerous venture funds and their portfolio companies in a wide variety of matters.
