FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have an hourly rate for weekly or occasional lessons, and a discounted rate for a series of lessons, to be paid in advance or on an agreed-upon schedule. My rate for tutoring at your place or neighbourhood may be higher than tutoring near me, depending on distance.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to start with a brief meeting (online since Covid). If the customer hires me, I begin the process by getting to know the person and finding out what he/she wants from tutoring and a getting a sense of how to work together. I also listen for what language needs the person has, and I start planning. I try to make it clear that we are partners in the learning process, and always welcome questions and requests.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have advanced degrees in English and Education and additional qualification courses in English (honours specialist) and ESL (specialist) from the Ontario Ministry of Education. I received on-the-job training in Adult Literacy, and have been a teacher and tutor trainer myself at the University of Toronto and York University and given conference presentations on effective tutoring. For French teaching, the same skill training applies, and my French language proficiency derives from a strong background (school and university) and ongoing study and practice in recent years.
