Introduction: My main service is helping people improve their English. I provide English language teaching and assistance to students and to adult professionals from other countries as well as help for high school and college students. As a qualified and experienced high school English and adult ESL teacher, my services include tutoring to increase success in school and on tests, and building oral and written language skills for workplace advancement. One-on-one tutoring is a joy for me, and I love seeing my clients make progress. Each client's program is designed specifically for him or her, and you can expect to be given tips and encouragement regarding learning between lessons.

She focused on my interests or favorites, so I could learn a lot of things from many experiences with her. For example, increasing vocabruaries by learning lylics of musicals, learning American culture and history by visiting her house, hitorical places and musicals, and practicing pronunciations which I hadn't mastered. What is in her brilliant lessons was her professional coaching style that she adjusted lesson contents with flexibility depending on my schedule, theater schedule, weathere..... That's why I could experience as much as I can even though my stay in the U.S. was very limited. Last but not least, she was very friendly like my mother and my friend at the same time. I had the wonderful stay for studying thanks to her love.

Carolyn is a very good teacher, she helped me improve my English and access very rigorous professional trainings. She gave me the confidence I needed to speak English freely. She is such a professional and nice teacher, you can trust her.

Carolyn is one of the most conscientious and responsible teachers I've ever met. She would dedicate a large amount of time to preparing all teaching materials, grading students' works, and giving feedbacks immediately. Her class is highly informative and very well designed.

French Lessons

After recently spending 6 months in France, I returned to NY with a passion and commitment to continue improving my French. I enrolled in Alliance Francaise, and despite my efforts, I was finding it difficult to apply the rote grammar learning to real-time, everyday French conversation. So, I decided to find a tutor to help fill the gaps. What I like abut Carolyn is that she adapts her training to meet your needs. We have found the right balance of grammar lessons, listening exercising, and speaking corrections. She doesn't adapt a one size fits all approach, and it works.

"I hired Carolyn as my daughter’s tutor in 2012. My daughter was struggling with English in school and was very open to get some help but only with the right teacher (we had a failed attempt before Carolyn). Carolyn adapted her teaching style to my daughter’s needs and was gentle and supportive in her approach. We saw results immediately, with grades improving after a few lessons. Best part though, since then, my daughter loves English – it is now one of her favorite subjects."

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I have an hourly rate for weekly or occasional lessons, and a discounted rate for a series of lessons, to be paid in advance or on an agreed-upon schedule. My rate for tutoring at your place or neighbourhood may be higher than tutoring near me, depending on distance.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have advanced degrees in English and Education and additional qualification courses in English (honours specialist) and ESL (specialist) from the Ontario Ministry of Education. I received on-the-job training in Adult Literacy, and have been a teacher and tutor trainer myself at the University of Toronto and York University and given conference presentations on effective tutoring. For French teaching, the same skill training applies, and my French language proficiency derives from a strong background (school and university) and ongoing study and practice in recent years.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I began my teaching career in a literacy tutorial program, and loved working one-on-one and in small groups right from the start. For many years after that, I taught both adolescents and adults in high school classes (English and ESL), offering extra help as part of my job. I loved teaching classes too, but retired early to work independently in my preferred way (tutoring) and in a way that gave me more flexibility in my schedule. In addition to teaching, I have strong editing and writing skills, and many years experience with student essays. I planned, when I left the classroom, to use these skills too as part of my freelance career.
