I have been taking voice lessons from Julie Kinscheck for over three years now and am very pleased with her as a teacher. I have a very busy schedule as a manager and she has been very flexible in making the lessons happen. These lessons have built my confidence and inspired me to perform more often because of my growth as a singer. I enjoy singing in the regular student recitals. I appreciate her patience helping me to learn to read music, improve my breath support, tone and more. She also has a good listening ear when I need to talk. She motivates me to want to practice to be my best. I also see she is an excellent role model for her younger students, always willing to expand her own horizons by learning and then teaching them songs which they want to perform. She genuinely cares about her students and takes a personal interest in their lives. You can tell she has a passion for teaching. I highly recommend her!

Brad is such a wonderful teacher! I started sending my 10-year-old daughter to him in September for the classical guitar and she loves him and her guitar lessons. Brad has really instilled a passion for music in my daughter and I never have to hound her to practice. My son has been listening to his big sister practicing and now wants to play the guitar as well and will start lessons with Brad this September! Brad is a very caring and accommodating teacher! So glad to have found him

Loved that Adam is both a musician and a DJ! He was able to play acoustic for our ceremony and then turn our reception into a party as a DJ. Took the decision of band or DJ completely out of the equation because he is truly the best of both worlds. He was easy to work with about song choice and various other customizations. He also MC'ed our reception and kept everything flowing. Would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a musician and/or DJ.

Ryan completely exceeded our expectations. This was not an easy gig: he worked with me to put together music performances for a birthday party. He had to accompany amateur singers and musicians, create a performance from scratch with four kids between 4 and 11 years old, play cocktail music and even do a little improvised accompaniment of the birthday boy! He was extremely competent, bringing his wealth of knowledge to help me execute my vision. Ryan was creative, open, responsive, flexible, and patient (with me and with the kids!). He provided us with tremendous value for our event, and we are forever grateful for his contribution.

My daughters, who are now 12 and 14, will be starting their fourth year of piano instruction with Christie. Christie approaches each lesson with exceptional knowledge, creativity, energy, enthusiasm - and an expectation that the girls have done their homework and are committed to learning to play. My girls have thrived under her teaching approach, which consists mainly of a combination of evaluating and practicing multiple songs, and reviewing theory. Christie is excellent at setting expectations at the start of the year, and weekly. She is also excellent at assessing strengths and challenges of the girls, and adapting her approach as needed. She challenges them in ways that require them to do their best, and exposes them to new things. My 14 year old played her first duet at the Spring concert, which required her to master Ave Maria on the piano and learn to play it with an accompanying violinist. It was a very rewarding experience and my daughter is interested in doing others. Christie is always prompt and cheerful, and fills the house with her positive energy. She has made learning the piano a very positive and rewarding experience for the girls, and I feel very fortunate that she is their instructor!

During the preparations for our wedding in 2012, we received recommendations about the beautiful and talented Jazz vocalist/songwriter, Gabriela Martina, from friends of ours. After a fantastic evening at a jazz club in New York and a short meeting with Gabriela Martina, our choice was made right then and there! We just wanted HER for this special day in our life!!! And it was definitively the right decision! Our song requests for the wedding ceremony such as our favorite love songs from stars like Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, Bette Middler etc. were not a problem at all for Gabriela Martina and she adjusted her repertoire wonderfully and seemed very accommodating to our wishes. People sat with tearful eyes and deeply touched hearts during the whole ceremony. I will never forget this moment in my life. We asked RED VELVET SOUNDS to play some more smooth jazz, light swing music while our guests were having dinner and later for the party they came out with funky, groovy and soulful songs that fit perfect! They seemed very open and flexible in terms of music genre and cleary - we had a blast! Thanks RED VELVET SOUNDS for a very professional performance in any way and your wonderful voice, Gabriela Martina: you guys made our big day unforgettable for everyone!

In my role at Berklee College of Music, I see/hear a lot of music. I happened to check out The New Review this week -- this band is the straight-up, no B.S., *real deal,* hands down. Nine-piece mad-tight band. Great musicians and excellent vocalists making a completely fun atmosphere. Nothing at all against DJs, but there's something hella-special about singers and players who love what they're doing to make your body move, and this band does it like few others. They packed the place, and even people with too little room to dance couldn't help bopping their heads. If you're looking for a band that feels the joy of playing and gives it to a whole crowd, The New Review is it. Absolutely "pure funk, uncut funk, the bomb."

My husband and I were guests at a wedding for my friend's daughter and we thought Emotion was fabulous! They had energy, the lead female singer's voice was so true to the original artist's and the band was great! The music selection was also spectacular and I know they assisted with it. I'd see them again any day!

David: “I had SEVERAL people, dozens, tell me that the band was awesome which I knew would happen but many people said “I feel like I’m at a rock concert - I am so into the music.” Just awesome. Everyone spoke about every part of the band too. “The horn guys are amazing” “That drummer is SICK!” “That’s one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard live” (Billy Jean - I mean come on - that guitar bit at the end was just mind blowing), and on and on. And as far as the singers connecting with the audience, it was unreal. I mean unreal. They made every person feel special. I know I shouldn’t but I felt proud for picking Downtown Fever! -Julie and Tyson Schoezel”

As a teacher I understand what it's like not to "get it" the first time. Not all of us are Mendelssohn or Bach. Also, I understand the problems involved for the late starter or the adult who had lessons years ago and now would like to try it again. Patience and love are the key elements to my approach to teaching. But, I also expect my students to work honestly and diligently no matter how difficult the task seems to be.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

        • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
        • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
        • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
